After defeating Team Czechia by a score of 4-0 on Thursday, Team Canada was back in action on Friday.
The second of three round robin games was contested against Team Switzerland, with Canada defeating the famously neutral team 5-1 to give them six standings points through two games.
All eyes were on Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, who played his second career Olympic game. After picking up three assists and laying down the body on Thursday, it took McDavid just six minutes into the first period to score his first career Olympic goal.
On a power play, McDavid received a pass from Nathan MacKinnon in the left faceoff dot. The best player of all time was given far too much time, as the Swiss defender went down way too early, allowing McDavid to rip it past Akira Schmid.
Five minutes later, McDavid picked up his fifth point at the Olympics. After getting the zone, Tom Wilson dropped the puck to McDavid, who found Thomas Harley on the weakside all alone. The Dallas Stars defenceman ripped it past the Swiss netminder to make it 2-0.
About two minutes later, the Swiss cut the lead in half, the first goal that Team Canada had allowed in the tournament. Early in the second period, McDavid teamed up with Macklin Celebrini and MacKinnon, with the trio scoring Team Canada’s third goal of the game. Unfortunately, McDavid didn’t get a point on this goal.
Team Canada scored an insurance goal about seven and a half minutes into the third period, as Sidney Crosby deflected the puck in for his sixth career Olympic goal. Celebrini took a penalty midway through the final frame, and once that penalty was killed, Celebrini got in on the forecheck, McDavid came away with the puck out of the corner and got a shot on goal. Although he was unable to score, MacKinnon was there to bash in the rebound to make it 5-1.

Takeaways…

  • Hockey is a great game, but it can be easy to forget that it’s just that, a game. Late in the third period, Tom Wilson and Kevin Fiala got tangled up along the boards, with Wilson falling on Fiala’s leg. A stretcher was needed to take Fiala off the ice, a horrible sight to see. Our best wishes go out to Fiala.
  • With a goal and two assists in his two games, Connor McDavid’s six points lead the entire tournament. Over the years, there’s been a lot of talk about how “McDavid isn’t the best player in the world”, which is just foolishness after watching these last two games. He was physical once again, finishing a big hit behind Team Switzerland’s net.
  • McDavid played alongside Macklin Celebrini and Wilson in Thursday’s game. However, MacKinnon filled a shift with McDavid and Celebrini, and the trio have instantly found chemistry. It would not be surprising to see those three together in Team Canada’s next game.
  • With the win, Team Canada has won the group as Team France has yet to win a game and they have the tie-breaker over both Team Switzerland and Team Czechia. What’s now important is finishing first in the tournament, meaning they need to win their next game and finish with the top goal differential.
  • Team Canada’s next game is on Sunday at 8:40 PM MT against Team France, who have lost both games they’ve played in the tournament. But before that, Leon Draisaitil, Josh Samanski, and Team Germany will play Team Latvia on Sunday at 4:10 AM MT. Yes, you read that start time correctly.
