The first indications of who Connor McDavid will play with at the Olympic Games arrived on Sunday.
As Team Canada held their first skate together, the Edmonton Oilers phenom centred the top line with Macklin Celebrini on the left wing and Tom Wilson on the right wing during line rushes.
TSN’s Ryan Rishaug also reported that the first power-play unit would feature McDavid, along with Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Sam Reinhart, and Cale Makar.
Rishaug spoke to McDavid briefly before the skate. He joked about taking melatonin for the flight, saying he had no secrets to getting around jet lag. He looked focused on what lies ahead.
“It’s been great. It’s been really cool here, and just getting to the Village for the first time. It’s really cool just to be around all the athletes. It’s special to be here,” said McDavid.
“Just being here, seeing all the athletes come through, the team is altogether now. It definitely feels more real.”
McDavid will wear “A” as an assistant captain, with Crosby as the captain, and Cale Makar as the other assistant captain.
Team Canada’s group features Czechia, Switzerland, and France. Canada begins group play on Thursday morning against Czechia, playing Switzerland on Friday, and France on Sunday.
McDavid spoke in his Player’s Tribune article published last week about how much he’s looking forward to the experience, saying he just wants to win something again.
“That’s what was so incredible about the 4 Nations last year. When I pulled on my jersey for the final against the U.S., I remembered that it had been eight years since that World Championship gold medal in Moscow. That was the last time I celebrated winning something. Eight years. And so that game against the U.S. in Boston last year … it meant so many different things to me. Representing Canada means everything to me,” said McDavid.
“With not being able to play at the Olympics until this season, it’s been this part of me that’s been missing. Some of my favorite hockey memories ever are with a Canada jersey on. Or even just watching as a fan.”
