The Edmonton Oilers found a way to get a win, securing their second straight overtime winner off the stick of Jack Roslovic.
It came in part thanks to a swift offside challenge from Oilers video coach Noah Segall that negated a Travis Konecny goal in the final minute of the third, but that goal didn’t dictate how well Edmonton played Wednesday night.
Over the course of the night, it was clear that the Oilers were dictating the pace of game, one of the first games this season where it really felt front-to-back that Edmonton was the better team. The numbers supported it, as Edmonton outshot the Philadelphia Flyers 32-21, controlling 65.2 percent of the expected goal share.
While the Oilers got hemmed in during the first five minutes of the game, head coach Kris Knoblauch said, getting bailed out by saves from Stuart Skinner, the team seemed to settle in.
“We were able to get one in the first period, and we had many chances in the second, (but) couldn’t capitalize,” said Knoblauch. “Last 30 seconds there, we saw it very close, and you never know because sometimes it doesn’t go how you think it is.
“It’s a game of inches and they got a goal taken away just being offside by a couple inches, and we were able to get the overtime goal just because we were onside by a couple of inches.”
The Oilers would open the scoring late in the first period, as Evan Bouchard capped off some nice work by Matt Savoie and Connor McDavid, watching the Flyers tie it up on the power play with just over four minutes left in the second frame.
The aforementioned challenge kept the Oilers in the game, where Roslovic came up clutch yet again.
“Jack has been a great addition to our team — five on five, the power play, obviously overtime,” said Knoblauch. “We wanted more speed. I don’t think you can have enough speed in your lineup, and he helps with that. Also, just some secondary scoring and he has provided that, so we’re very, very fortunate to have him.”
Now 16 games into his tenure with the Oilers, Roslovic has made his impact felt. He’s racked up five goals and six assists for 11 points, taking xx shots on goal, which, on a per-hour rate, sits at 8.5 — a team-leading mark well above the second-place McDavid, with 7.9 shots on goal per hour.
“(I’m) just trying to stick to my game,” said Roslovic. “I’ve said it many times, but just trying to play fast, play hard, play with a lot of energy and then let my skill take over.”
His skill had certainly taken over as of late, as all five goals and 10 of his points have come in his last nine games.
For the Oilers, though, it was a huge win to kick off their seven-game road trip, where they can’t squander any opportunity to secure points. They’ll face the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second time this week later tonight, before it continues Saturday night against the Carolina Hurricanes. Next week, it’s Buffalo Monday, Washington Wednesday, Tampa Bay Thursday, and Florida a week from Saturday.
