Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday! In case you missed last week’s edition, we’re bringing back a much-beloved series across the Nation Network.
So, without further ado…
On this day in 1995, the @Edmonton Oilers fell to the @St Louis Blues 4-0 and the Edmonton Journal’s Mark Spector wasn’t shy of laying blame at the feet of the players.

“The Edmonton Oilers rookies have stopped scoring now, and will someone please get the memo to the veterans that they could start anytime?” penned Spector.
Now it should be known that the Oilers were hit by the flu bug — as noted by Spector — but that was no excuse for the players who still had played one of their best games on a road trip that saw them go 1-3.
Edmonton got down nearly nine minutes into the first frame when Blues C Adam Creighton beat out Jason Arnott for positioning in front of the net tipping a shot past Bill Ranford.
Brent Hull scored four minutes later, giving the Blues a 2-0 lead.
“Jason Arnott, who mailed in his effort Monday, couldn’t handle Adam Creighton in front of the Oilers goal in the first period, and the rangy centre tipped a shot past Bill Ranford. Then Todd Marchant disregarded a puck in the offensive zone, and the resulting 4-on-2 ended in a Brett Hull bullet to make it 2-0 after one period,” Spector wrote.
It was clearly a tough game for a very, very young Oilers club. Here’s just a few of the young guns featured in the team’s lineups that year and their stats by seasons end:
- Ryan Smyth – 18 yo – 3 GP, no points.
- Jason Arnott – 20 yo – 42 GP 15-22—37
- Todd Marchant – 21 yo – 45 GP 13-14—27
- Boris Mironov – 22 yo – 29 GP 1-7—8
- Doug Weight – 24 yo – 48 GP 7-33—40
