Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!
This week 2002 (Oct. 7), the Edmonton Oilers traded Mike Frier to the Washington Capitals.
The Oilers got back second and third-round picks in the 2003 draft. Edmonton ended up trading that second-round pick along with Janne Niinimaa to the New York Islanders for Brad Isbister and Raffi Torres.
The third-round pick was used to draft Zack Stortini.
Grier originally came to Edmonton 12 days before I was born on Aug. 4, 1995, along with Curtis Joseph. Edmonton gave St. Louis 1st round picks in 1996 and 1997.
As soon as he arrived in Edmonton, Grier had made his impact felt scoring 15 goals and 32 assists in his rookie year. By the time he left, Grier had totalled 81 goals and 183 points in 448 games — the best offensive production of his career.
He retired after a 14-year career in 2011.
Isbister, Torres and Stortini all had solid careers in the NHL spending multiple years in the Oilers organization.
