Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!
This week in 2014 (Jan. 15), the Edmonton Oilers traded Devan Dubnyk to the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Matt Hendricks.
It marked the end of a tumultuous time for Dubnyk in Edmonton, and kicked off a redemption tour that later led him to Vezina contention and a reborn hockey career.
Drafted by Edmonton in the first round of the 2004 draft, Dubnyk didn’t debut with the Oilers until 2009 and found himself in a one-two situation with a variety of other faces. He never played in more than 47 games in a year with the Oilers, and looking back his numbers were a lot better than I remember, that is, until his final season with Edmonton.
Ahead of being traded Dubnyk really struggled. Edmonton had brought in both Ben Scrivens and Ilya Bryzgalov that year, and Dubnyk found himself the odd man out. He stumbled posting a .894 save percentage and an 11-17-2 record before being traded.
He later landed with the Minnsota Wild, where he posted the best numbers of his career.
Hendricks, meanwhile, came into Edmonton and filled the role of a 4th liner admirably. While his numbers were never good, he was the ultimate glue guy for the Oilers in the four years he played there.
He left the Oilers as a free agent after the 2017 playoffs.
