This week in 2019 (Feb. 16), the Edmonton Oilers acquired Sam Gagner in what became his second stint with the team.

Edmonton dealt Ryan Spooner to the Vancouver Canucks for Gagner, who quickly came as a bottom-six scoring threat. In 25 games down the stretch of the season, Gagner chipped in five goals and as many assists in a group that struggled to score.

And the fans loved it, too. Gagner, who was drafted sixth overall by the Oilers in 2007, had been a fan favourite early in his career and many weren’t happy when Edmonton had dealt him for Teddy Purcell in 2014. Gagner’s return didn’t last long as a year later, in another move the fans weren’t a fan of, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings in the Andreas Athanasiou deal.

Over his second stint in town, he played in 61 games scoring 10 goals and 22 points. Over his full 542 game career with the Oilers, Gagner scored 111 goals and 317 points.
