Today in 1984, Wayne Gretzky won his fifth consecutive Hart Trophy as league MVP and his fourth consecutive Art Ross Trophy as the league’s top scorer.

That 83-84 season was nothing short of incredible for Gretzky. In 74 games played, he scored 87 goals and 118 assists for a remarkable 205 points (which somehow was only the fourth-highest point total of his career).

Over the course of the season, Gretzky notched 10 hat tricks including two separate back-to-back hatty games. He also broke his own record by scoring in 51 consecutive games that season.

This, all the while with Gretzky being hampered by an ankle injury since January of that season that required off-season surgery.

In the voting, Gretzky garnered 60 of the 62 first-place votes cast by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association. He went on to win another three consecutive Hart and Art Ross Trophies.
