Today in 1992, the Edmonton Oilers acquired Shayne Corson, Brent Gilchrist, and Vladimir Vjutek from the Montreal Canadiens.

In exchange, the Oilers moved Vincent Damphousse and a 1993 4th round pick.

Damphousse had only been with the Oilers for one year after being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a trade that saw Edmonton ship out Grant Fuhr and Glenn Anderson. In his lone year with the Oilers, Damphousse was nothing short of a star. He scored 38 goals and 89 points in 80 games adding another 14 points in 16 playoff games.

It was reported he had asked for a trade as he wasn’t happy in Edmonton, but Damphousse shot down those rumours.

In Edmonton, Corson flourished where he spent three seasons scoring 137 points in 192 games. Famously, Corson’s captaincy was stripped from him by then-head coach George Burnett who was fired shortly thereafter.

Corson left the Oilers in free agency in 1995 to sign with the St. Louis Blues.

Gilchrist appeared in 60 games for the Oilers scoring 10 goals and as many assists in the 1992-93 season, but on March 5, 1993, he was dealt to the Minnesota Wild for Todd Elik.

Vujtek, meanwhile, played in 70 games between 1992 and 1994 for Edmonton scoring 30 points. He went to play in Europe between 1994 and 1997, when he returned to North America and Edmonton dealt him to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Lastly, Damphousse went on to have a very successful career with the Habs scoring 498 points in 519 games before he finished his career with six seasons in San Jose.
