Viktor Arvidsson had a breakout night for the Edmonton Oilers Friday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins, putting up three assists en route to a 4-0 victory.
But his night ended on a sour note, as with just over five minutes left in the game, he was taken out hard into the boards. Arvidsson built up speed through the neutral zone chasing a dumped-in puck, burning past Penguins defenceman Marcus Pettersson. As the pair neared the corner, Arvidsson blew a tire — in part due to Pettersson making contact with him — as he hit the boards hard.
A brief scrum ensued with linemate Leon Draisaitl going after Pettersson, as Oilers trainer T.D. Forss went out to meet Arvidsson, who skated off the ice on his own, flexing his right hand.

The ensuing faceoff, however, Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse wasn’t going to let the hit go unanswered, talking to Pettersson off the faceoff, asking for a fight. Pettersson would oblige, and the two went toe-to-toe at centre ice.
Nurse opened with a big right hand, and after the pair kept each other at arm’s length for a moment, he would come back with an uppercut and a chopping right hand. Pettersson would catch Nurse on the chin with a solid right, throwing a few more towards the back of Nurse’s helmet. It seemed to charge the latter up, as he would push Pettersson away and pull him back, breaking his grip, before Nurse unloaded multiple punches, flinging him to the ground.
Thankfully, Arvidsson appeared no worse for wear from the hit, as he would take a 25-second shift in the final minute of the game.
For Nurse, meanwhile, this scrap marked his second of the season, having fought Nashville Predators forward Michael McCarron eight days ago. It’s also his 31st in an Oilers jersey, accounting for the 2015 Young Stars tournament, pre-season, regular season and post-season action.
