There are regular wins, and then there’s statement wins like the Edmonton Oilers’ 4-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night at Rogers Place. It took a hot minute for the Oilers to open the scoring, at one point outshooting the Penguins 29-5. However, a perfect shot from Leon Draisaitl hit the opposite post and beat Joel Blomqvist to score the game-winning goal 13 minutes into the second period.
The Oilers took a 2-0 lead four and a half minutes later, as a wrist shot from Evan Bouchard near the point beat Blomqvist. After a long offside review, the goal stood to give the Oilers an insurance goal.
Edmonton kept up the pressure in the third period, as Ryan Nugent-Hokpins scored his first goal of the season 16 seconds into the final frame. He stole the puck from Kris Letang, beating Blomqvist over the blocker with that nice release of his.
The fourth and final goal came on the power play, as a seeing-eye shot from Mattias Ekholm beat Blomqvist thanks to a great screen from Corey Perry.
Takeaways…
This was by far Viktor Arvidsson’s best game as an Oiler, picking up three assists and leading the team in points. However, late in the game, he crashed hard into the boards. He was seemingly okay, playing one shift afterwards.
That hit led to a fight between Darnell Nurse and Marcus Pettersson, who pushed Arvidsson into the boards. Funnily enough, the Oilers are 3-0-0 when they fight, while being 0-4-1 when they don’t fight this season. Maybe they should add Matt Rempe or someone.
Stuart Skinner had a terrific game, saving all 27 shots he faced, the second consecutive game with a save percentage above .900, and his third in his last four games. Shoutout to Joel Blomqvist as well, who faced 50 shots, allowing four goals for a .920 save percentage.
It was a good game for the Oilers’ special teams, as they killed off both penalty kills they faced. This was only the second time all season that the Oilers didn’t allow a goal on the penalty kill. Moreover, they scored their third power play goal of the season.
The Oilers return to action on Sunday, as they’ll head on a road trip that starts in Detroit. This season, the Red Wings a 4-3-0 with an active two-game winning streak.
