According to our own Jason Gregor, the Edmonton Oilers will not be tendering qualifying offers to both Tobias Rieder and Ty Rattie, sending both guys to free agency on July 1st.
In a surprise to no one, the Edmonton Oilers will not be extending qualifying offers to Tobias Rieder and Ty Rattie after both guys struggled through disappointing 2018-19 campaigns. After each signing one-year deals last summer, both Rieder and Rattie were expected to chip in with some secondary offence and, as we all know, that did not happen at all. Between the two, the Oilers only got four goals and 18 assists for 22 points, which would be a decent total for a single bottom-six player but definitely not two with a combined 117 games played between them.
To be fair, part of me truly believes that some team will pick up Tobias Rieder on a cheap one-year deal and actually get the value out of him that we all expected when he signed here last summer, but I don’t know if the same will be said for Ty Rattie. Since being drafted 32nd overall back in 2011, Rattie has yet to truly establish himself as a consistent NHL option and I wonder how many chances he has left to try and make that happen. Either way, both of these guys will be rocking new unis next year and it’ll be interesting to see how they perform with their new team.
According to PuckPedia, the Edmonton Oilers free up about $2.8 million in cap space by choosing to walk away from these two players.
