It was his first-ever game in North America and Matvey Petrov did not disappoint.
The 18-year-old Russian, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2021 draft, potted a hat trick and added an assist as the OHL’s North Bay Battalion routed the Peterborough Petes.
Named the first star of the game, Petrov first two goals came in the first frame while number three came on the powerplay in the third period.
His eight shots on net, too, were a game-high.
Petrov spent last season with MHK Krylia Sovetov Moskva in the MHL, the Russian junior league, where he scored 22 goals and 42 points in 58 games. He led his team in goals and came in second in points.
