Sometimes these prospect reports can write themselves. Some week’s news drops right on my lap, which happened this past week.
Most of the news didn’t come from the typical suspects this time around, so here’s a quick update on what’s been happening.
Matvey Petrov grabbed a pair of goals to take his tally to 34. Petrov now has 80 points in his first season in North Bay. Since the Battalion relocated from Brampton in 2013, only six players have hit the 80 point mark in a season. Petrov is now one of them, and with seven games left, he’s got a chance to push himself higher up that list.
Xavier Bourgault continued his run back from injury. The Oilers’ first round scored a pair of goals in two games for the Shawinigan Cataractes. The same can be said for Jake Chiasson from the Brandon Wheat Kings. He’s now 12 games into his return and is now finding his groove again. Chiasson had a goal and two assists in three games this week.
Finally, Carter Savoie was named to the NCAA West Regional All-Tournament Team.
And there is your brief catch up. Now, then dive into the rest of the news.
Holloway and the Bakersfield boys
If you didn’t see Dylan Holloway’s highlight reel assist from last night, then here you go.

— Bakersfield Condors (@Condors) March 31, 2022
He’s confident! And you’ve got to love that.
Hopefully, it won’t be long before we see him with an Oilers logo on his chest, but for now, he’s doing a great job in the AHL. With six points in his last three games, Holloway is now up to 19 points. He hasn’t scored a goal in seven games, but that shouldn’t worry anyone. Holloway has only had one big goal-scoring season and that was in his last season with the Okotoks Oilers when he scored 40. Other than that, the most goals he had in junior or college was 11.
Stuart Skinner had another strong performance for the Condors too. He had a 23 save shutout in a 4-0 win over the Henderson Silver Knights. The other two games this week weren’t great for him. He had a 0.890SV% and averaged 3.5 goals against. With that being said, the Henderson game was a good bounceback for him. Skinner now has a 0.923SV% and a 2.17 GAA,
Filip Engaras also played in his first game with the Condors. He did not register a point.
Mazura Leaves Providence College
Tomas Mazura switched allegiances earlier this week, transferring from Providence College to St Lawrence University.
Mazura is the Czech Republic forward the Oilers drafted in the 6th round (162nd overall) in the 2019 draft. He’s a big body standing at 6’3″ and 190 lbs.
He transferred to St Lawrence after one season with Providence. Mazura scored once and grabbed one assist in only games for the Friars.
Perhaps a fresh start with the Saints in the ECAC conference can help Mazura regain his offensive game. When the Oilers drafted him, he’d just finished a 54 point campaign with the Kimball Union Academy. Mazura followed that up with a 73 point season in his final season before heading to the next level.
It would be great to see him get back that side of his game.
Oilers Sign Goaltender Ryan Fanti
Ken Holland added to the organization’s goaltending depth, signing Ryan Fanti out of the NCAA. Fanti was one of the best goaltenders in the NCAA with the University of Minnesota-Duluth this season.
In 38 games with the Bulldogs in 2022, Fanti finished with a 0.928SV% and a 1.83 GAA with a record of 20-12-4. His collegiate career came to an end in the quarterfinals of the National Tournament. Ironically, Carter Savoie scored the game-winner to advance the University of Denver and send Fanti and the Bulldogs home.

Fanti is on an amateur tryout contract until the end of the season; then, his two-year deal kicks in for the 2022-23 season.
