One of the newest names on the Edmonton Oilers roster is already making an impact.
On Saturday night, in a game against the Dallas Stars, Oilers defenceman Jake Walman managed to post his first point in his first game with his new team.
The point came as an assist with several minutes to go in the first period as a pass from Walman sent forward Zach Hyman on a breakaway, and the fellow Toronto native buried his second of the game and 22nd of the season to give Edmonton a 2-1 lead.
It was Walman’s 27th assist of the season. He posted two helpers in his final game with his former team, the San Jose Sharks, on March 4.
Walman came to Edmonton in a deal made a little before the NHL Trade Deadline, as he was traded to the Oilers for Carl Berglund and a conditional first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Offense is one of the aspects of Walman’s game that the Oilers want to utilize as they gear up for another playoff run. Along with bringing overall depth to the blue line, his awareness in the opposition’s end and with the puck make him a solid two-way defender.
In his two full seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, the 29-year-old showed a scoring touch that the team had not seen in a number of years, scoring 12 goals and nine assists for a then-career-high of 21 points. This past summer, the Red Wings sent Walman to the Sharks for future considerations, finding a way to give themselves some salary room.
While Walman has spent the first four months of the season on a pretty pad Sharks team, he has flourished with the elevated ice time. Averaging 23:11 of ice time, the most in his career, he has notched six goals and a new career best of 33 points in 51 games.
Over the past five NHL seasons, Walman has appeared in 253 games, scoring 31 goals and 53 assists for 84 points, appearing in just one Stanley Cup Playoff game with the St. Louis Blues in 2021.
