The Day After 72.0: Tristan Jarry back in win column as Oilers continue dominance over Utah

The Oilers needed a win on Tuesday to avoid falling into a three-game skid, but nobody needed one more than Tristan Jarry.
The goaltender Edmonton acquired to stabilize things between the pipes had been pushed into a backup role earlier this month following a 7-2 loss to the Dallas Stars. The former Penguin posted a 7-7-1 record with an .854 save percentage over his first 15 games with the club, struggling to find his game after a lower-body injury in late December.
After watching Connor Ingram start five straight, Jarry finally got the nod against the Utah Mammoth to open this two-game road trip.
Alexander Kerfoot opened the scoring midway through the first period, but Jack Roslovic responded a few minutes later to tie the game. Edmonton grabbed its first lead in the second when Matthew Savoie scored shorthanded, though Utah answered on that same power play. From there, the Oilers took over, scoring three unanswered in the back half of the game to skate away with a 5-2 win.
Connor McDavid scored twice, the 400th and 401st goals of his career, and became the third-fastest player in NHL history to reach 1,200 points. Evan Bouchard recorded three assists to move to 82 points on the season, Roslovic added his 18th and 19th goals, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins reached 800 career points with an assist.
The milestones will grab the headlines, but nobody needed this one more than Jarry. He stopped 16 of 18 shots for his first win since coming on in relief of Ingram during Edmonton’s 4-3 win in Colorado two weeks ago. It was also his first win as a starter since a 7-4 victory over Anaheim on January 26.
Ingram will likely be given the net in the second game of this two-game trip when the Oilers go up against the Golden Knights on Thursday. But Jarry’s win in Utah was enough that he should see the net once or twice next week during Edmonton’s upcoming four-game homestand.
Edmonton’s win jumped them back over Vegas for second spot in the Pacific Division, but the Ducks also won on Tuesday, keeping them five points up on Edmonton for first. The Oilers have won all five games they’ve played against Utah since the team moved from Arizona following the 2023-24 season.
What they said…
Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch on what the Oilers did to snap their two-game slide…
“A lot more attention to the defensive details, a lot more grit, a lot more simplicity. Not turning pucks over, getting pucks in deep. Going forward, especially without Leon [Draisaitl], we definitely need to be playing like that. And even when Leon comes back, we need to still play that. It’s a playoff-hockey-type game that we just played.”
Oilers captain Connor McDavid on reaching 400 goals and 1,200 points in his NHL career…
“Goal-scoring is something that has not come easy to me or naturally to me,” McDavid said. “Something that I work at, something that I focus on and set it at the beginning of the year, trying to shoot more pucks and take pucks [to the net].”“When you’re getting up to some of these bigger numbers, it’s a reflection of time past. It’s my 11th year in this league, and you don’t get those back. I’m fortunate to have played with some really great players, I think that’s the main thing. These milestones are just a nice time to reflect and I’m just very grateful to play in this league. I’ve played with some great players.”
Knoblauch on McDavid becoming the third-fastest NHL player to reach 1,200 career points…
“He’s got a great release, but I just think he’s so difficult to check, and he’s determined to get to the net. So many players have the ability to score goals, but they just don’t pay a price. And Connor obviously is not afraid to drive to the net.”
Oilers goaltender Tristan Jarry on returning to the net and getting his first win in two weeks…
“The guys, they were doing everything in their power to help me, whether it’s practice or games. They support me. They were there with me, and they pushed me. And I think that’s all you could ask for from them. They played great in front of me tonight. They were blocking shots. They were getting pucks out, clearing rebounds, and it made it really easy for me tonight.”
Utah head coach Andre Tourigny on what went wrong for the Mammoth in their loss to Edmonton…
“We did a lot of good stuff defensively, but I think we didn’t have our usual aggression and our pace. We didn’t have the puck enough, so we let them maneuver too much with the puck. I would have loved to be more aggressive.”
Mammoth forward Alex Kerfoot on the Oilers shutting things down when leading in the third period…
“We obviously just didn’t have enough of a pushback, in the third especially. We’re down two goals in a game, fighting for a playoff spot against a team who’s also fighting, and we didn’t even make them work for it, didn’t make them earn it. Disappointing. It’s on us.”
Up next…
The Oilers will wrap up this quick two-game road swing on Thursday in Vegas. After that, Edmonton will return home for a four-game homestand, beginning with a matinée match on Saturday against the Pacific Division-leading Ducks.
