It’s been a busy few days around Oil Country with the Edmonton Oilers acquiring Mattias Ekholm on Tuesday, and Nick Bjugstad and Cam Dineen on Thursday.
With the trade deadline 22 hours away at the time of writing, it appears the team might be finished shopping.
Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli posted on Twitter after the Bjugstad trade that “never say never, but believe #Oilers are done shopping after Ekholm and Bjugstad.” The Athletic’s Daniel Nugent-Bowman followed it up later with a Tweet of his own suggesting the same.
“Barring something unforeseen — and stranger things have happened — I expect things will be quiet for the Oilers until the trade deadline passes at 1 p.m. MT on Friday (tomorrow). They’re very likely finished dealing.”
It’s been a fine deadline if this is all the Oilers are able to accomplish. The addition of Ekholm could very well turnout to be one of the best trades this organization has made in a very, very long time. Stylistically, his strengths were on full display in his debut as an Edmonton Oiler on Wednesday night. Bjugstad, too, is a great addition to the Oilers forward corps, even if I’m not a fan of them moving on from Michael Kesselring as a prospect.
There’s still lots that could change, as both Seravalli and Nugent-Bowman noted. The Oilers are waiting to hear more about Kailer Yamamoto’s status ahead of tomorrow. If he’s to miss extended time — say, until the end of the regular season — could that launch the Oilers back into trade conversations.
