It’s been a fairly busy week in Oilersnation thus far. First, the Oilers relieved Duane Sutter of his duties, then they signed defenceman, Logan Day, to a one-year entry-level contract. Now, Ken Holland has just signed goaltender, Olivier Rodrigue, to a three year ELC.
Rodrigue just finished his third season in the QMJHL with the Drummondville Voltigeurs, and put up a 2.43 GAA and a .902 S% in 48 games. He is one of many goalies in the Oilers deep prospect pool right now, and with the recent contract, he’s got to be feeling good about his future.
In case you forgot, the Edmonton Oilers traded a third and a fifth-round draft pick in the 2018 Entry Level Draft to Montreal for their second-round pick. We then used that second-round pick to draft Rodrigue 62nd overall. The two players who later got drafted by Montreal were Jordan Harris and Samuel Houde.
Rodrigue is known for his athleticism and is very quick in his crease. With our backup goalie situation being unknown at the moment, if the Oilers choose to promote one of their Bakersfield Condors goalies to the position, I wonder if this opens up a spot for Rodrigue to compete for on the AHL squad? However, from Ken Holland’s most recent interview with Jason Gregor, it sounds like he wants a more experienced goaltender in the Oilers backup role. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments!
