Real Life Podcast Episode 87: A Fireside Chat with Brandon Davidson

On this week’s Real Life Podcast, the boys were lucky and honoured to welcome former Edmonton Oilers defenceman, Brandon Davidson, on the day that his PTO with the Chicago Blackhawks was announced.

With an actual NHL player in the room, the boys wanted to get Brandon’s story from his start to the present day so the podcast starts out with a look Davidson’s journey to the NHL. It was fascinating to hear Davidson tell his story about leaving his hometown of Taber, working his way through Olds and into junior where he played for the Regina Pats. Never in his wildest imagination did he think that he’d be drafted by the team he grew up watching, but that’s exactly what happened when the Oilers selected him in the sixth round of the 2010 NHL Draft. After being drafted, Davidson battled through all kinds of adversity, including a successful fight against testicular cancer that truly inspired him to make the most of every moment he had. One of the coolest moments in this week’s podcast was when Davidson told the boys about the moment when he knew that he had finally arrived in the NHL and that he would be sticking around with the Oilers after spending years working on his craft in the minors. And since no podcast would be complete without some Oilers questions, Davidson answered everything the guys wanted to know, including what it’s like to play with Connor McDavid, who are the glue guys in the dressing room, and what was going through his mind during his first NHL fight. Needless to say, it was a jam-packed episode of the podcast, and one that you’ll definitely want to listen to.
