If you haven’t heard, goaltending is a hot-button issue in Edmonton right and it became an even bigger story following Mike Smith’s performance against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Oilers outplayed one of the best teams in the NHL, scored three goals against one of the best goalies in the world, and it still wasn’t enough. Goaltending is the number one reason why this team isn’t pushing for the spot in the division.
Today on The Daily Faceoff Show, Mike McKenna broke down what’s wrong with Smith’s game and why he’s struggling right now. As a former NHL goalie, McKenna had a unique perspective on where Smith’s game is lacking and he had some takes on his use of the ‘RVH’ stance. Frank Seravalli chimed in and talked about whether or not Oilers GM Ken Holland will be able to make a move ahead of the March 21st trade deadline. There are some goalies available around the league, but prices will be high. Will Holland pay that price? Seravalli gave his thoughts.
I think most fans would agree that getting a legit starting goalie should be the number one priority for Holland and the Oilers in the next few weeks, we’ll see if it actually happens.
