The Morning After Report: World Juniors – Day 3

Day three had a light schedule in the first place and then after the USA and Switzerland game was postponed, fans were only left with an evening matchup between Canada and Austria.

After the IIHF received news that Team USA had positive COVID cases, they had no choice but to cancel their game against Switzerland. As a result of that forfeit, Switzerland received three points. The question is now, what’s going to happen today when the US is scheduled to play Sweden?

For now, let’s take a look at what happened between Canada and Austria.

“Hey Baby” will be stuck in the Austrian’s heads after Canada showed no mercy beating them 11-2. Leon Sommer faced 64 shots in the Austria goal and, to his credit, made a lot of great saves. However, when you face an offence like Canada, it’s a challenging task for any goaltender.

If you didn’t know who Connor Bedard was before, now he’s on everybody’s radar after tying the Canadian World Juniors record for goals in a game, beating Sommer four times. If that wasn’t impressive, then maybe the fact he became the first 16-year-old to score a hat trick since Wayne Gretzky changes your mind.

Canada also got goals from Kent Johnson, Lukas Cormier, Logan Stankoven, Cole Perfetti, Mason McTavish (two) and Mavrik Bourque. Every Canadian forward scored a point or more in the win.

Austria did score twice, surpassing their goal total of one last year. Lukas Necesany and Mathias Bohm scored the goals.
