Weekend Update, October 1 2017

6 years agoIt’s been a very eventful week for the Oilers top prospects, as the big club gets down to the 23-man limit. News broke today that Jesse Puljujarvi is heading back to Bakersfield while Kailer Yamamoto remains on the roster. Without jinxing things, looks like Edmonton’s most recent first-round selection has made the roster for the next nine games.
- Peter Chiarelli to Bob Stauffer: “Jesse’s status, in that he can go to the AHL gives us more options. He can go there, you can pull him back, versus Kailer when you send him down you can’t pull him back until his season’s done.” Source
Chiarelli made a point of saying he wasn’t foreshadowing anything at the time of the interview, but there is logic in trying Yamamoto for nine games in what amounts to an extended audition. I don’t think anyone can say for certain how this turns out and Puljujarvi could light up the California portion of the American League in the next few weeks. Seems a reasonable bet we’ll see JP in Edmonton sooner than later.
DMITRI SAMORUKOV
At the time he was drafted, some Oilers fans wondered about the wisdom of bringing in another lefty defender. Edmonton’s “Leftorium” defensive depth chart ran long, over hill and dale. Why bring in another LHD?
- Brock Otten, OHL Prospects: Loved this pick by the Oilers this year. Samorukov has one of the highest ceilings of any defender taken from the OHL this past draft. He can impact the game at both ends of the ice. I see Samorukov doubling his points totals from last year and hitting the 40+ point mark. Source
Doubling last year’s output (67gp, 4-16-20) would require .588 points-per-game from Samorukov to reach 40 points in 68 league games. So far he’s 4gp, 0-3-3 (.750) after a three point weekend for the Guelph Storm. This could be one of the more interesting players to follow this winter.
KIRILL MAKSIMOV
One of the truly intriguing later selections in the 2017 draft was Kirill Maksimov of the Niagara IceDogs. The skill winger had a fine run after a deadline deal in 2016-17. This year he’s off to a very strong start (4gp, 3-4-7) and ranks No. 7 (tie) in league scoring. He had an excellent training camp and things are looking good early for him.
