The Edmonton Oilers made noise on Wednesday night.
Just after 5 pm MST, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Oilers were working to acquire Jason Dickinson from the Chicago Blackhawks.
Two hours later, various NHL insiders confirmed the details: The Oilers acquired Jason Dickinson with 50 per cent of his salary retained, and Colton Dach in exchange for Andrew Mangiapane and top-12 protected 2027 first-round pick.
This trade, however, didn’t receive the same love as Edmonton’s first deal earlier this week with Chicago for Connor Murphy, with fans split on it online. On one hand, some like the addition of Jason Dickinson, while many say this is an overpay on Edmonton’s part.

Jason Dickinson is a fine bottom 6 C who’s very good defensively with no offence. He’s a FA at the end of this season. I get you have to dunk Mangiapane but dude he’s not worth a 1st AT ALL. Should have just dumped AM88 elsewhere first and then trade like a 2nd for Dickinson.

Stan Bowman is out there filling up the holes this team has shown recently, he’s fixing the defense [sic] by bringing Murphy and Dickinson with RETAINED SALARIES. Yet, people complain about a 1st round pick who won’t be seeing an NHL game for at least 5 years.

Bowman is addressing our needs guys…also remember that the big name guys usually dont pan out for playoffs. – Quincy_Rabbit via X
Look, the Edmonton Oilers are OBJECTIVELY better today than they were 48 hours ago. That doesn’t mean the asset management isn’t terrible by Bowman. – AustinHockeyYT via X
Fantastic work by Bowman! – Noel Rinsky via X
This is a pathetically bad trade man. – MikeBartner via X
How is Jason Dickinson a 3rd line centre? If Bowman is sending a 1st for him, this is an atrocious deal. – Karman Gill via X
It’s safe to say there’s been a lukewarm reaction on social media to this trade. Not necessarily about the players Edmonton acquired, but about what the Oilers gave up in return.
It’s so over. Fire Bowman into the sun. – Alexiamoss.bsky.social via BlueSky
Good trade.. lets hope Knoblauch coaches them to have a roll and Identity. Cause if he just benches them and they only get to play 3 minutes a game just to give the top lines a short breather then they wont be able to do much. – Colton Dowhan via Facebook
Steep overpay when the team isn’t going far this year. Dallas, Colorado & Minnesota all own the Oilers this season due to more depth & better overall defensive play & goaltending. All these recent deals for pending ufa’s that don’t move the needle & could be picked up free in the off-season. Bowman continues showing he’s not capable but keeps trying to show he can do “something”, like wrecking the teams short & long term future. – Fay Mah via Facebook
I love this for the oilers. We needed toughness big time and all three new players add that. Welcome to Oil country. – Pete Burns via Facebook
Honestly good deal. Chicago isn’t gaining much in Mangiapane, so you add some value for their side of things. Many Oilers fans are so one dimensional, they only see things from the Oilers’ perspective. – Jtanasychuk19 via Instagram
If I was to tell you our trade deadline targets at the beginning of the season would be Connor Murphy, Colton Dach, and Jason Dickinson, you would probably laugh and tell me I’ve never watched hockey a day in my life. – Kiatt_nonos via Instagram
Overpaid on the deal, tired of having to send out picks to compensate for bad contracts. That being said, Dickinson sounds great, and I love having more toughness. Murphy and Dach being added is a game-changer physically. – Harl000_ via Instagram
I absolutely love this trade! Dickinson is a solid pk bottom 6 center! And dach will be a perfect future 3C! – gpagnotta17 via X
The 2027 Edmonton Oilers 1st round pick (now Chicago’s) won’t play an NHL game before Connor McDavid turns 35. – Curtis Hirsch via X
Stan Bowman wanted to size up his bottom-six, and he got exactly that with the additions of Dach and Dickinson. With that being said, that might be all the business we get from the organization between now and Friday’s trade deadline.
The Oilers will have some time to integrate their new additions into the lineup; their next game isn’t until Friday night when the Caroline Hurricanes come to town.
