The Edmonton Oilers shouldn’t expect much in return for Andrew Mangiapane, according to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, but there will be interest.
On the Bleacher Report’s Insider Notebook, Seravalli said teams are always looking for a scoring winger like Mangiapane, who has produced in the past.
Linked to trade rumours over the past several days, Seravalli sees potential for both parties to move on.
“I don’t know that the Oilers would have to retain money at this point, but what you can do is cross off any return,” said Seravalli. “And for the Oilers, the point should be to try and move on from the contract and the fit. It hasn’t worked to this point.
“Mangiapane is looking for more opportunity elsewhere, and the Oilers have been real open and honest with guys that have given them a chance. ‘Hey, come here. Play. See what it’s like, see how the fit is, and then if it doesn’t work out, we’ll try and find a way to move you.’”
This season, the Oilers and Mangiapane have not been a fit. He’s scored five goals and 11 points, but he’s scored just once in the last 26 games.
Mangiapane signed a two-year deal carrying a $3.6-million contract in the off-season.
Last season with the Washington Capitals, he scored 14 goals and 28 points. However, Mangiapane’s point production has declined for three straight seasons.
The Edmonton Oilers could be seen as a player-friendly destination, after working with a player like David Tomášek to allow him to return home and play. Seravalli believes a similar situation is developing here.
“I assume that the same could be in order for Mangiapane. There were teams that were interested in him over the summer,” said Seravalli.
The Oilers scratched Mangiapane on December 29th against the Winnipeg Jets.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch put Mangiapane back in the lineup on December 31st against the Boston Bruins. He played 7:31 of ice-time, and was given a ten-minute misconduct in the third period after a skirmish with Mark Kastelic.
Edmonton is back in action on Saturday afternoon against the Philadelphia Flyers.
