Friday wasn’t a memorable day for the Edmonton Oilers organization.

While the big-league club dropped an infuriating Game 3 in their first-round playoffs series with the Kings in Los Angeles, their AHL affiliate was knocked out of the playoffs.

The Bakersfield Condors finished the regular season in fifth place in the AHL’s Pacific Division with a 37-31-4 record, so they matched up against the Abbotsford Canucks, who went 40-25-4 and finished fourth in the division.

The Canucks won Game 1 in Abbotsford by a score of 3-0. Goaltender Spencer Martin posted a 21-save shutout and Nils Hoglander, Max Sasson, and Jack Rathbone scored the goals for Abbotsford. That win by the Canucks put Bakersfield in a must-win situation in Friday’s Game 2 in Abbotsford.

After a scoreless first frame, the Canucks got off to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Rathbone and Brady Keeper. Late in the second, James Hamblin gave the Condors some life with the team’s first goal of the series…

Early in the third period, Raphael Lavoie knotted the score at 2-2. Luke Esposito grabbed the puck just inside Bakersfield’s blueline and he fed it to Lavoie who was able to skate into the slot and snipe a shot blocker side on Arturs Silvos…

Unfortunately, the Canucks were able to regain their lead shortly after as the Condors ran into penalty troubles. Jason Demers took a delay of game penalty and then Justin Bailey was given a cross-checking penalty just 43 seconds later.

Nils Hoglander would score with the man advantage to make the score 3-2 in favour of Abbotsford and the Canucks put the game away in the final minute when John Stevens scored while the Condors had their goalie pulled for an extra attacker.

With the Condors out of the playoffs, the Oilers will surely announce some black aces who will come up and practice with the team in the coming days.
