Any hope the Edmonton Oilers had at getting back at the St. Louis Blues for their offer sheets to Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway has been quelled Tuesday, with The Lou inking Jake Neighbours to a two-year extension.
Neighbours, 22, was drafted by the Blues 26th overall in the 2020 draft after he wrapped up a successful four-year stint with the Western Hockey League’s Edmonton Oil Kings.
The transition to the NHL wasn’t smooth, splitting time in his rookie season between the NHL and AHL, but the Calgary, Alta. native broke out last year, scoring 27 goals and 38 points in 77 games. He’s kept that pace up this season, racking up two goals and three points in six games.
It’s all led Blues GM Doug Armstrong to get the pending restricted free agent under wraps, inking a deal with a $3.75-million cap hit with his entry-level contract finishing after this season.
While there was no word about the Oilers actually having an interest in a revenge offer sheet, Neighbours would’ve been the mostly likely target. Other pending Blues RFA’s are winger Alexi Toropchenko, defencemen Scott Perunovich and Pierre-Oliver Joseph, and netminder Joel Hofer.
Broberg and Holloway are off to strong starts with the Blues. Broberg has scored a point in every game so far this season, tallying a goal and five assists and setting a franchise record for the longest point streak by a defenceman to start their career in St. Louis. While the point pace will be unsustainable throughout an 82-game season, he’s virtually halfway to the 13 points in 82 games he had over three seasons with the Oilers. Holloway, meanwhile, has tallied a goal and an assist through six games, with his tally coming Saturday against the Carolina Hurricanes en route to a 4-3 win.
The Oilers moved quickly this summer to try and replace the pair, declining to match the offer sheets, trading for Vasily Podkolzin and Ty Emberson.
Podkolzin has been up and down the lineup, struggling to find a place. He’s been held pointless through six games, taking just six shots on goal, but has laid a team-high 17 hits. Despite being outscored 2-0 in his 59 minutes of five-on-five ice-time, the Oilers have dominated play with him on the ice, controlling 69.4 percent of the shot attempt share, 71.8 percent of the expected goal share and 67.8 percent of the scoring chance share.
Emberson, too, has yet to find a place, playing in five of the Oilers’ six games, set to be a healthy scratch Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes. He’s fired eight shots on goal, laid four hits and blocked five shots so far. Emberson’s underlying numbers are similar to Podkolzin’s, with the Oilers getting outscored 4-1 in his 69 five-on-five minutes, while controlling 57.5 percent of the shot attempt share, 58.5 percent of the expected goal share, and 66.1 percent of the scoring chance share.
Time will tell how things pan out in St. Louis for both Broberg and Holloway, but their early returns have been excellent.
