Can the Oilers win a Darnell Nurse trade?

Darnell Nurse was a victim of his own success in 2021 – he could never live up to the massive contract he signed with the Edmonton Oilers after his 16-goal season in the all-Canadian COVID division.
The truth is, he’s never been that guy, viewing himself as better offensively than he truly was. The mistakes he made were always viewed in light of his contract. The good in his game could never justify the ifs, ands, or buts of his deal, which paid him like a Zach Werenski without getting the two-way play of a No. 1 defenceman.
So, four years into the $74-million contract, halfway through the deal, the Oilers and Nurse are headed toward a divorce. It isn’t just one-sided anymore, as the news Thursday morning confirms that Nurse agrees it’s time for a fresh start.
It is time.
The first major hurdle for general manager Stan Bowman in reshaping the Oilers’ cap situation with their most punitive contract has been cleared. But now the real work begins.
How can the Oilers get better by trading Darnell Nurse, and how much can they save by doing the deal?
Terms of engagement
Would Ken Holland, the man who signed him to that rich contract, be interested? Is there anything real to the suggestion that San Jose, with only two NHL-calibre defencemen under contract into next season, value a veteran of almost 800 NHL games and two Stanley Cup final appearances?
It’s tricky. There are the teams the Oilers would like to play matchmaker with, and then there are the teams Nurse will actually waive to go to.
The Sportsnet article from Elliotte Friedman and Mark Spector says that Nurse has given a list of three-to-five teams that he would consider. Was it three teams or was it five?
Regardless, he has control in this situation. He holds the cards.
Does Darnell Nurse want to go to a contender, along the lines of the short trade list Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin, and relay the usual names like Vegas, Florida, Tampa Bay, or Dallas? Is being close to home in Toronto appealing, despite going from one hockey mecca to another? Or is keeping a low profile in a non-traditional hockey market the best decision for him?
Since the Oilers have walked Nurse down this path, they must have an idea of who’s interested. But he must sign off the trade. What appeals to him most?
Bowman needs his best work
Imagining an Oilers defence corps without Nurse is hard to do considering the last decade. Since 2017, Nurse has been remarkably healthy, never playing fewer than 70 games (lockout excluded).
Jake Walman will have to fill the hole on the left side since he’s being paid like a top-end second-pair defenceman and he’ll need to play like one. Connor Murphy is presumably the top target to re-sign. Plus, whoever comes back in the trade or how the Oilers use the money that Nurse’s trade will create.
But the bottom line is, this trade and the spin-off will define Bowman’s tenure as GM, just like Tristan Jarry for Stuart Skinner and assets is his biggest swing — and miss.
Is getting rid of Darnell Nurse alone good enough? It all depends on the money and the return.
When he has one hand tied behind his back, and limited wiggle room, Bowman has done some of his best work, like extracting Vasily Podkolzin out of Vancouver. When he’s had time, options, and resources, it’s been scary. Bowman needs a win, which will be hard to achieve.
