The Edmonton Oilers were tight-lipped about their trade plans.
Earlier this week, Oilers CEO Jeff Jackson said the Oilers were “going to sit tight,” only for a few days later to to pull the trigger on two trades.
One involved Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak, and a 2029 second-round pick in 2029 being sent to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Tristan Jarry and Samuel Poulin. The other trade was with the Nashville Predators, seeing the Oilers acquire Spencer Stastney for a 2027 third-round pick.
It’s a move many Oilers fans hoped for, as the “get a goalie” crowd got their wish. As news trickled in this morning and the trade was made official, the reaction online was a little all over the place.
Man I just don’t get this trade and I say this as someone who didn’t think Stu was good. Change was needed for sure probably for both guys and the Penguins might move on from both Stu and Kulak as they are both UFAs hence the 2nd but this feels like a panic move. – Raghu Sharma via X
I’m angry right now. The Oilers went lateral with a goalie trade while getting an injury prone goalie. They also got worse on defence when they needed to get better. Loser deal. – Morgan Laidler via X
we are all the real winners in the jarry/skinner trade because who doesn’t love watching two of the best players in the world racing to outscore their goalie gaffes. – Shaynagoldman_ via X
If Skinner is gone I’m gonna be truly heartbroken. Say what you want about his play but Stu was an incredible teammate and showed up everyday wanting to win. He was thrown to the wolves and still took the oilers the closest they have been. This sucks. It really sucks. – Cecidrais via X
I really thought Stuart Skinner was gonna be the one to lead the Oilers to the promise land. He gave us glimmers of hope and I’ll never forget that. An awesome dude who I wish nothing but the best. Hope he succeeds with Pittsburgh. – OilersAdam via X
I genuinely cannot believe we waited like two years for the Oilers to make a goaltending move and this is what they came up with. – Pete Blackburn via X
I’m not sure this team is better this morning than it was last night. – Kevin McCurdy via X
Can we please get rid of Bowman, from all the oiler fans around the world. – Csexton91 via Instagram
We were never going to win a trade with Stu, but never saw it going this bad! Did we at least get magic beans?!?!! Holy crap. – Tylerfoxcroft via Instagram
Cool. Good trade, Jarry is older, double the cost, and has similar stats. Looking forward to seeing Stu put up Vézina level numbers for the Pens. As is tradition with goalies that Edmonton fans run out of town. – Platinumhunter88 via Instagram
Not saying Skinner was the answer but Jarry is most definitely not. – Cschneider444 via Instagram
Tristan Waiver Wire Jarry, the answer to all our hopes and dreams.  Congrats, fans that yell SHOOOOOT at the game, you got your bag of pucks return for Stu. – Lee Panas via Facebook
Bowman is just Scooby Doo villain Chiarelli in a mask. – Shawn Geniole via Facebook
Just because fans whine doesn’t mean you have to make brutal brutal trades Skinner is better than Jarry. Kulak is one of the better ones brutal. – Travis Louie Morrison via Facebook
On the other side, Penguins fans also had differing opinions about this trade.
Any Pens fans that are complaining about this trade are clueless. Y’all begged for Jarry to be gone last year and now you’re crying?? The bottom line is, he’s inconsistent, his contract is bad, Skinner can be trade bait, and the path is now cleared for Murashov in the future. W. – Ayeeechief via X
This trade is horrendous for Pens. Skinner is worse and RFA end of year. Kulak 3rd line aging D man, rental — UFA end of year. And a 2nd rounder 4 years from now? Good grief. Oh and total salaries are pretty much a wash. Someone help me understand this ridiculousness? – Bobtimusprime via X
The Pens did nothing to improve in this trade! I know everyone hates Jarry but he was playing well. Hate this for the Pens. – Mike Adamson via X
WTF. Jarry is actually good this year and we trade him away? Where’s the thought behind that?? – Dean Thomas via X
Hoping this does good for both. Skinner becomes more consistent, and Jarry will probably win the Cup now. And Kulak and Graves will be the slowest tandem in NHL history. – Donald Cribbs via Facebook
Edmonton is a goalie graveyard. Skinner will be excited to get out of there and play with better defense. (sic) – Darren Roemer via Facebook
The Pens should have asked for one on the Oilers good young players. Issac Howard or Matt Savoie. Oilers might have balked at first but they would have given in. They needed to upgrade in goal. – Dwayne Zern via Facebook
I’m actually kinda excited to see what Skinner does with a fresh start out of that hole in a wall village he played for. Don’t forget he can win in playoff series. His captain just always flopped when it mattered. – Lawerence James via Facebook
The goaltending conversation in Edmonton has been non-stop over the past three years, and even before the tandem of Jack Campbell and Stuart Skinner. Now the focus shifts to Tristan Jarry, with the expectation that he can be the goalie who helps the Oilers deliver a Stanley Cup.
In a few days, we could see Stuart Skinner face his former team, as well as the Oilers, in Pittsburgh on their upcoming road trip. December 16th is looking to be must-see TV, depending on whether both goalies start that night.
