There is mixed messaging as of mid-Friday afternoon on whether Claude Giroux has agreed to a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers or not, but the Edmonton Oilers are believed to be in consideration for the 38-year-old.
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported that the Flyers are signing Claude Giroux on Friday afternoon. This was a couple of hours after Pagnotta’s appearance on Daily Faceoff’s The Sheet, in which he said Giroux was “seriously considering” signing with the Oilers and that the Flyers were out on a possible reunion.
However, as of the time of writing, there have been no other reports of Giroux’s signing. Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen says on Twitter afterwards that he doesn’t believe Giroux has made a final decision.
“I think that he’s seriously considering that possibility, going out and joining the Edmonton Oilers and their quest for a Cup,” said Pagnotta.
“I think Ottawa is still on the table. Philly was in this for a stretch. I was told earlier today not to expect it unless something changes. That Philly is out. They could circle back, and something could happen. But it sounds like Philly was out, and Edmonton and Ottawa were the options here.”
Bob Stauffer, host of Oilers Now, appeared to drop some breadcrumbs on Thursday’s show, tying the Oilers to Giroux without explicitly saying so. PuckPedia reports the Oilers have $7.253 million in cap space with 13 forwards signed, excluding Max Jones and restricted free agent Colton Dach.
Edmonton has a couple of restricted free agent players to figure out, including newcomer Shakir Mukhamadullin, Spencer Stastney, and Owen Michaels.
Giroux still producing
Last season, Giroux scored 14 goals and 49 points while playing all 82 games with the Ottawa Senators. That’s the third-highest point total of any currently unrestricted free agent (Anthony Mantha, Patrick Kane).
A veteran of 1345 games, Giroux will turn 39 in January and has slowly had his minutes reduced, playing an average ice-time at 16:18 per game, one of his lowest career totals.
However, Giroux had the highest faceoff win percentage in the NHL at 63.1 per cent, while still battling in 799 faceoffs. He is taking fewer draws per season as he ages, but that was the highest single-season faceoff win percentage of his career. He would provide a right-handed option in the dot that the Oilers would lack.
Ottawa gave Giroux a one-year, $2 million deal a year ago, with up to $2.75 million in performance bonuses.
