Good morning, everyone, and a happy Monday to you all. As per tradition, I’ve got a brand new mailbag set to go after taking your questions and sending them to the crew for their takes. This week, we’re discussing benchmarks for Matt Savoie, the Oilers’ youth, Mattias Janmark, and more. If you’ve got a question you’d like to ask, email it to me at baggedmilk@oilersnation.com or on Twitter at @jsbmbaggedmilk, and I’ll get to you as soon as I can.

1) Yves asks – We all saw the news about the website change this week, and I wanted to use the opportunity to look back. What is everyone’s favourite Oilersnation memory since the site launched in 2007?
Jason Gregor:
When we got Eberle to take a picture holding a card saying “Hi Wanye” and gave it to Wanye. He was blown away.
Liam Horrobin:
The 15th birthday party at The Pint was a blast. I also really enjoyed our Nation Citizens Christmas party at Dogpatch.
Michael Menzies:
Being fairly new around here and having few interactions with ON in the flesh before I started, it’s just a blast getting to interact with so many passionate people who read the site and watch the shows. In an online world swimming with negativity, there’s so many good people who invite you into their routines and that’s so cool. The answer is really you.
Baggedmilk:
For me it’s the people. From the people I’ve been lucky enough to work with like Gregor, Robin Brownlee, Jonathan Willis, Lowetide, Tyler, Zach, and everyone in between. The people at ON have been and still are the best. Then there’s also the people I’ve met at parties, on Nation Vacations, online, or offline. Nation Citizens are the best part of this job, and I look forward to seeing what we get up to over the next 18 years.

2) Oilers fan in Van asks – Knock on wood that he’s healthy, but does Matt Savoie need to reach at least 18 goals again this season for it to be considered a successful offensive year for him?
Jason Gregor:
No. He could scored 17 goals and have 45 points. I don’t think you can ever place a specific number of goals or points to determine if a player had a successful season or not.
Liam Horrobin:
Yes, he needs to become a regular contributor to the Oilers top six, especially with the loss of Jack Roslovic.
Michael Menzies:
Thinking back, Savoie was blessed with so many chances in the early half of the season and was snakebit, then starting burying seemingly every chance he was getting post-Olympics. The point being, there’s going to be a lot of ups-and-downs as he grows. I’m not sure I see him a natural goalscorer, but 20 goals is a nice target for any player.
If it was Deal or No Deal, and I offered you a 17-goal and 45-point Savoie season, would you take that offer? I’d be tempted to say no deal and hope for more.
Baggedmilk:
I think if Savoie is in the same ballpark then we should consider it a successful season. The sophomore slump is real, and I’d be very happy with another version of the same story we saw last year… maybe without the slow start.

3) Nathan asks – Stan Bowman said that he wants to have some flexibility under the cap when the season starts, but the Oilers don’t usually miss out on many early-season trades. Do you think it’s wise to keep money set aside rather than spending now to know exactly what you’ll have?
Jason Gregor:
Yes. If a great trade landed in his lap, I’m sure he’d jump at it, but there haven’t been many early season trades. They signed Roslovic on opening night last year, but that was rare. Saving cap space and seeing what you have early in the year is the smart move. The season will show the organization what/who they need nearing the trade deadline, and they might suffer a key injury and need to replace a position they don’t need to know. Rather than wasting space on an “okay” acquisition, I’d wait to see what unfolds in the first 50 games.
Liam Horrobin:
No, I would wait to spend. Better players can become available as the season progresses.
Michael Menzies:
I liked what Bowman said the other day with Stauffer talking about their mindset. This offseason was huge for having a healthier cap situation moving forward and I think making the big swing right now and taking away that wiggle room wouldn’t be prudent. Let’s be flexible.
Baggedmilk:
I think it’s worth a try since we’ve never really been in this position before. Pistol Pete was in charge the last time the Oilers had any space when the season ended, and I’m hoping that Stan Bowman can use what he has to trade for something a little better than a Brandon Manning.

4) Robert asks – Some of the core players are getting older. Do you think the Oil have enough youth in the lineup to take away some minutes from Nugent-Hopkins or Hyman?
Jason Gregor:
Hyman had 31 goals in 58 games last season. He was the only player in the NHL to score 30 goals by playing less than 60 games. I see no reason he won’t score 30 goals again this year. And Savoie, Podkolzin and Howard are all young. Oilers are not old.
Liam Horrobin:
Yes, in Podkolzin and Savoie. However, I wouldn’t start pulling minutes from Hyman and/or Nugent-Hopkins until they prove they’re no longer reliable offensive players.
Michael Menzies:
One hunch I have is that next summer when discussing a McDavid extension, the organization needs to show him that in order to sign for longer term, there has to be a path to stay competitive. And that’s only going to happen with younger players starting to take on roles, or at least, being ready for that opportunity. That transition has started well, in my eyes. It would be nice to be a bit younger, but this is winning time, too.
Baggedmilk:
I think they’ve done a lot of work on this over the last couple of seasons actually. They’re kinda middle of the pack right now when it comes to average age these days.

5) Bryan asks – You don’t hear much about Mattias Janmark these days. Do you see him as part of the Oilers plans for the year or no?
Jason Gregor:
He will have to show up in camp and prove his shoulder issues are in the past. His advantage is as a fourth line player he is very reliable defensively and on the penalty kill. He is smart and a very good skater, but if his shoulder isn’t fully healed and he can’t contribute anything offensively he will be in trouble. I see him and Mathieu Joseph battling for a spot.
Liam Horrobin:
I would suspect he gets the opportunity to prove himself at camp and showcase that he is healthy again.
Michael Menzies:
I think they’ll try to do right by him. If that means he gets traded for an opportunity where he’ll play more, then I think that’s where this conversation ultimately goes.
Baggedmilk:
Can I be honest with you? I kinda forgot he was still an Oiler. He’s gonna have to fight for his spot.
