Head coach Kris Knoblauch provided further details on the Edmonton Oilers goaltender situation going forward on Sunday morning.
He told reporters ahead of the Oilers’ matchup against the Nashville Predators that Connor Ingram will be playing more than Tristan Jarry down the stretch of the season.
There is one back-to-back scenario remaining on the Oilers schedule in their last 15 games.
“Right now, Connor [Ingram] is our starting goalie,” said Knoblauch. “He will get in the majority of the starts, as of now, until something changes.”
Tristan Jarry’s struggles have fallen to alarming levels. In his last five starts, Jarry is 0-4, allowing 26 goals, a .797 save percentage, and was pulled once. He was thrust into action on Tuesday against the Avalanche with the Ingram injury and won the game for the Oilers, making 11 out of 12 saves.
But the team came out flat against the Stars on Thursday, and Jarry didn’t seem comfortable, either, allowing seven goals on 27 shots. According to Moneypuck, in the last 10 games, Jarry is tied with Kevin Lankinen for the worst Goals Saved Above Expected in the NHL at minus-11.4.
“Probably more than anything in that position of goaltender is his confidence, being able to have confidence in making the save,” said Knoblauch.

‘Need both our goalies…’

“When he came back from injury, he missed some time, he wasn’t practicing, he was just getting in the groove,” Knoblauch continued. “Yes, he was cleared, and he was healthy, but it takes some time. We weren’t playing well in front of him. He wasn’t playing well. It just compounded into deteriorating his game and ultimately deteriorating his confidence.
“The only way you can pick that up and feel good about your game is to start in practices and do the little things, working hard, and building your confidence through making the plays in practice, which will later translate over into games. I think he’s a wonderful goaltender, and we’re going to need him down the stretch. We can’t run Ingram every single game. We like how he’s playing right now. We’re going to need both our goalies, and we’ll need him to be at his best.”
Ingram made 22 saves against the St. Louis Blues Friday, as the team failed to secure two points, despite leading by two goals in the third period. Although his Goals Saved Above Expected numbers in the last 10 games are minus-5.4, he is 2-0-1 in his last four starts.
He will start against the Predators on Sunday night.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is a game-time decision tonight, said Knoblauch. He flew back to Edmonton on Friday and missed the Blues game due to a personal matter. Ty Emberson skated Sunday morning and he will return to the lineup soon.
“He is feeling well, and it’s, I don’t know, within a week,” said Knoblauch. “But things are progressing nicely,”
