Sometimes, you just have to tip your cap to the other guy for a job well done.
That seems to be the case for the Edmonton Oilers, who played a strong game on Tuesday against the visiting Minnesota Wild but fell 1-0 because nothing is getting past Jesper Wallstedt right now.
The 20th overall pick from the 2021 NHL Draft has a .944 save percentage through 10 games this season and is an early bet to win the Calder Trophy for the league’s top rookie. Wallstedt owns an 8-0-2 record, and four of his eight victories have been shutouts.
And you thought trading down and ending up with Marc-Antoine Pouliot and Jean-François Jacques instead of Zach Parise was bad.
Anyways, let’s focus on the positives, like this 1-0 loss to the Wild. The Oilers threw 33 shots at the wall, while Stuart Skinner turned aside 23 of 24 shots from the Wild. According to Natural Stat Trick, Edmonton had 58 even-strength shot attempts compared to Minnesota’s 36. The Oilers had 24 scoring chances and seven from high danger, while the Wild had 19 scoring chances and only five from high danger.
The difference was this clapper from defenceman Jonas Brodin following a clean faceoff win in Edmonton’s zone from Nico Sturm.
The loss puts the Oilers at 11-11-5 on the season, tied with the Utah Mammoth for 10th in the Western Conference. Edmonton hasn’t strung consecutive wins together since early November, when they had back-to-back overtime victories over the Blue Jackets and Flyers.
With their 8-3 spanking from the Dallas Stars still visible in the rearview mirror, following up Saturday’s 4-0 win in Seattle with a 1-0 loss to the Wild feels like somewhat of a win for this underachieving group. But, of course, that’s ultimately a testament to just how low the bar is being set.

What they said…

Head coach Kris Knoblauch on the Oilers losing despite a strong showing…
“You’re disappointed anytime you lose. You look for the negatives. You look to critique the wins or the things that we didn’t do to get to win, but I thought we had some chances. Stu came up with some big saves, but overall, I thought we played a game where more often than not, we come out victorious and are feeling good about ourselves.”
“The NHL is about winning games, and you want to win, but in the long run, I prefer that we play the right way and we play the right way and that we’re going to win more often than not. Tonight, I thought we had an effort in a game where we should come away with the two points more often than not, and we’ve had some games this year where we were terrible, and we won games just by our goaltender being better or special teams, but there wasn’t much to like about it tonight.”
Zach Hyman on the Oilers improving their defensive game…
“They’re a good team and they’re playing really well. You gotta get to the net. It’s the defence’s job to box you out. It’s your job to get to the net. I thought we had some looks there, some wooks on the backside. Sometimes, when you throw it there, it hits something and goes in; sometimes, you throw it there and it goes clean through. Tonight, it felt like a night where we were getting stuff there, but we weren’t getting the second chances.”
“Over our last two games, we’ve given up one goal. So for a team that’s struggled to defend, that’s pretty good. If you give up one goal in two games, most of the time, you’re winning both. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find one tonight, but if we continue to play like that defensively, we’ll find our chances.”
Mattias Ekholm on the shutout by Jesper Wallstedt…
“Kudos to him, he was solid back there. But I thought we had chances. I thought we had looks. It’s just that things aren’t coming easily right now for us, so it’s about putting your head down and continuing to work. But if we keep playing like we did tonight, I think more often than not, we’ll like the result. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t our night.”
Jesper Wallstedt on how the Wild earned this shutout over the Oilers as a team…
“This is pretty fun. We’re playing great. The way we defend and our structure in our D-zone right now, the way guys sacrifice themselves, it’s a team effort. The way we’ve been playing in our own zone especially has been nothing else but spectacular.”
“I just can’t thank my teammates enough, nothing would be possible without them. I’m just trying to do my job and making a lot of saves, but you can’t do that without the way we’ve been playing tonight and every other game.”
Minnesota head coach John Hynes on beating Edmonton…
“I thought it was a really highly competitive game by both teams. I thought as the game went on, they had some pushes and I thought we did a good job defending and we got some good goaltending, a lot of blocked shots. [The Oilers] are always a tough team to play against and I’m glad we found a way to win.”

Up next…

The Oilers will continue their five-game homestand on Thursday when the Seattle Kraken visit Edmonton. The two teams played in Seattle on Saturday, with the Oilers cruising to a 4-0 victory. There were a few scraps in that game, so we’ll see if any of the testiness carries over.
