Welcome back to another edition of Ask Dubey.
The Edmonton Oilers playoff run has come and gone like that, and it’s right into off-season mode for the team. On this week’s edition of Ask Dubey, I fielded some questions about who my top goaltending target, and top free agent targets would be.
Let’s dive into them.

If you can add any goalie, who would it be?

We’ll go with a little hypothetical first, which I don’t believe is going to happen, but there are reasons why it could and why it would be interesting: pending free agent Sergei Bobrovsky.
He had a down year, Florida had a down year, but I still think he’s one of the best on the planet. He knows how to win. He can steal you a game. All of these things I don’t have to explain to you. We unfortunately got to watch Sergei Bobrovsky crush Edmonton Oilers fans’ hearts recently, so we know what he’s all about, and I still think he’s got his game.
Now, cons: he’s old, and I don’t know if he wants to move out of Florida. He’s obviously been there for a long time, and they’ve got no taxes, so it’d be easy to stay there. One more reason to stay there is that Florida’s probably going to be competitive next year and looking to push for another Stanley Cup. So, put all that aside, the con would be his age.
However, you look at everybody talking about this Connor McDavid window. He’s given them two years at a discount to win now. You only need him then for a year or two, and so you can solve your problem and figure it out later if you want to.
Now, it depends on what type of contract he’s looking for. He’s older, it’s going to be a shorter term. Again, it’s hard to figure out what that number would look like. And again, unfortunately, to keep bringing it up, that number can be a lot smaller in Florida and equal the same amount of money in your pocket. So the Oilers are at a disadvantage that way. However, I think that would be fun. I think obviously he would boost the Oilers’ chances a ton, and that’s no offence to anybody. That’s just because he’s one of the best to ever do it, and he’s won twice.

Who are your top free agent targets?

You’ve got to wait and see who’s going to re-sign, but a couple of guys have popped out to me. One is a former teammate of mine in Charlie Coyle, who I think would be a great add for anybody. He brings a lot to the table. He scored at a great pace this year, but he’s just your all-around centre man. He scores, he plays defensive minutes, he can kill penalties — all these things. He’s actually sneaky skilled. Having played with him, he’s got great hands. He’s good around the net and he’s a really big boy. He’s big, strong and would be a great addition to anybody. I’m looking at players that you’re not going to have to pay crazy amounts, although he has earned himself whatever he gets. Now he is a little bit older, which you wouldn’t be going for long-term that way.
Another one is Mason Marchment, who was traded to Columbus this year. Again, you talk about a guy who can be an agitator, he can get under your skin, he can play defensive minutes. But I believe he was almost a point-per-game player in Columbus and has shown in both Dallas and Columbus that he has that ability to kind of play with sandpaper, but also put the puck in the net.
When you’re looking at this Oilers team, you’re kind of looking at pieces to add that can help bring some of that identity to them, but also be able to contribute scoring, which is very, very necessary. We know where the scoring comes from. But can it come from a secondary source? And I think both of those players would add defensively, add minutes and all-around ability, but also add some offence to the team as well.
