Playoff season is back in Edmonton.
As the Oilers look to go on another deep run to the Stanley Cup Final — hopefully coming out on top this time — one of the biggest questions surrounding the team is their goaltending. Connor Ingram has taken the reins in Edmonton, but can he get the Oilers to the promised land?
Let’s get into some questions from this week’s episode.
Was it good for Ingram to play as much as he did down the stretch, or is the door open for him to burn out?
I do think it was a good thing. And no, he’s not going to burn out in playoffs. It wasn’t that many starts and he’s in good shape. But I think it was great that he got the starts, both for him and for the team. You want a situation where it’s not a question of who’s starting.
And not only that, but fans and players seem to be happy with Connor Ingram as the starter. He’s played really well, he’s given them consistent efforts starting that many games in a row. Now, he’s a consistent presence in the net that the team is going to need and want to feel that comfort in the playoffs. So I think it’s been a great opportunity for him.
And as far as burnout goes, no, he hasn’t. There hasn’t been that much of a season for him to get burnt out. I think that this is a great opportunity for him. He obviously knows that as he’s taken it to heart, to solidify himself in the NHL, to work to continue to be a starter. All of these things, there is going to be no mental or physical burnout for him at all. I played 38 straight and went into the playoffs one time in Minnesota. I think that probably some mental burnout after the first round a little bit when it’s harder to buckle down when we got off to a rough start against Chicago.
What’s your confidence in the Oilers’ goaltending heading into the playoffs?
Relatively high, I think, just purely based off of play. I think that Ingram’s given them consistency, and that’s something that’s been lacking a little bit. That was the gripe about Stuart Skinner: it was just the ups and downs and never really knowing what you’re going to get. And I think he’s done a really good job of every time he’s been in there, the team and the fans, they know what they’re going to get. Sometimes performances are better, sometimes they’re not as good, but for the most part, you’re getting a consistent effort, and that’s extremely important leading into the playoffs and in the playoffs as well. Then hopefully stepping up your game, which he’s shown the ability to do. So I like it. There’s always a “you never know until you know” about how the playoffs are going to go, how he’s going to react to it, how he’s going to play. So I look at the lack of experience as just what it is.
It’s a lack of experience. It doesn’t necessarily mean a good thing or a bad thing. It’s just that this is his first opportunity to, to go write his story. And it’s been a fun one for him this year. So I’m excited. If something happens to Connor Ingram, maybe not as much just because of how things have played out with Tristan Jarry this year. And that’s going to be a follow-up question here if something were to happen.
But let’s keep our fingers crossed that Connor Ingram not only stays healthy but continues to play the way he’s been playing. And then my confidence will continue to be high in the Oilers goaltending.
