The @Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenceman @Mike Green from the @Detroit Red Wings in exchange for @Kyle Brodziak and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2020.
Brodziak has been on LTIR all season and hasn’t played for the Oilers this season, while Green, 34, has appeared in 48 games for the Red Wings.
In those games the rearguard has scored three goals and another eight assists while playing just over 21 minutes per night.
The Red Wings will retain 50 percent of Green’s $5.375-million cap hit. The condition on the pick, meanwhile, sees Detroit get a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft that could jump to a 3rd in 2021 if: the Oilers get to the conference final, and Green plays in half of the games.
Green, a UFA at season’s end, isn’t the defenceman he once was but should be able to provide the Oilers some assurance on the backend as the team continues their playoff push.
He’s had a 5v5 CF% of 47.01 and an xGF% of 48.34. Playing on the worst team in the league, it’s no huge surprise to see his numbers struggle. A PDO of 95.4, however, suggests he may be able to rebound.
The cost is very low for what should be a serviceable 7th defenceman for the Oilers and it’s worth noting that Green had a no-move clause meaning he needed to waive to come to Edmonton.
According to PuckPedia, the Oilers will only be adding a $348k cap hit for the remainder of the season.
