‘We know what that feels like’: Connor McDavid gutted as Blue Jays drop Game 7 of World Series during Oilers game

Another sport rarely takes precedence over hockey on a Saturday night in Canada, but that was the case on November 1 as the Blue Jays faced the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series.
The fans in attendance at Rogers Place for the Oilers vs. Blackhawks game wanted to root for the Oilers, but it was hard not to give the Blue Jays some attention as they heartbreakingly lost at the end of the night.
Oilers fans even started a “Let’s Go Blue Jays” chant in the middle of play.
With everyone glued to what was happening in Toronto, the Oilers decided to put the historic baseball game on the Jumbotron during the hockey game. Oilers captain Connor McDavid shared his thoughts on the situation afterward.
“That was really, really strange. Obviously, we’re all on the Jays bandwagon and everybody’s wanting them to win, and it was so disappointing, obviously, but strange — strange to have it on during the game. Listening to the crowd was distracting for sure. I’m glad they shut it off for the third.”
To some, it might have seemed like McDavid was being negative about the situation, but in reality, he understood that the Oilers had a job to do and wanted to stay focused on their task. He didn’t express any frustration or disappointment; he and the team were just as invested in the Blue Jays as the fans were. For him, the priority was leaving Rogers Place with two points. However, he admitted the entire night felt unusual.
“It was bizarre. I found myself watching the Jays game sitting on the bench, you know, listening to the crowd while I’m on the ice, you know, ‘what just happened?’ It was very strange. But you know what, historic moment. Couldn’t be more gutted for those guys. Obviously, we know what that feels like, and for the way it happened, just completely gutted for those guys. It’s been a fun run, and it’s been a lot of fun. They’ve given Canada a lot to cheer about, and they should be very, very proud of themselves.”
The Oilers went on to defeat the Blackhawks in overtime, with Evan Bouchard scoring the game-winning goal. While it was fun to celebrate an Edmonton victory, there was still a sour feeling as the Blue Jays fell in extra innings.
It was a surreal, once-in-a-lifetime night in Canadian sports — one that fans will never forget. Hopefully, the next time this kind of crossover happens, Jays and Oilers fans will both be celebrating championships.
