In 2010, when the Edmonton Oilers selected Taylor Hall first overall, there was hope amongst Oilers fans that he would be the one to lead the franchise back to the promised land. Unfortunately, Hall never got the chance to see it through with Edmonton and didn’t even get to dress for a playoff game.
His time with the Oilers was short when you look at it. Only six seasons and 381 games played. It doesn’t feel like he played fewer than 400 games with the team, but in that time, he left young fans who grew up during the decade of darkness with fond memories.
Many are familiar with his history with the Oilers and the trade that transpired in 2016. Some fans are still sour with Edmonton’s return for him, but 10 years later, the fans who grew up with him were happy to watch him hoist the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes, and they shared their sentiments after Game 6.

I’ll be honest I’ve watched maybe 45 minutes total of this Stanley Cup final but seeing Taylor Hall, an Oilers legend who went through a decade of losing, and losing badly in Edmonton might bring a few tears to my eyes. So happy for him. He deserves it more than anymore. – Erik Anderssen via X
10 year old me would be smiling from ear to ear. Congrats Hallsy. – Shae_Nuge93 via X

I was there for Taylor’s first game as an Oiler. Good for him to finally reach the top. – b_obblehead_47 via X
Hall seems like one of those guys who lives & breathes hockey so deeply that it would have killed him inside if he never won. Really happy for him. – Pete Blackburn via X
It’s definitely bittersweet because Oilers fans wish it had been with the team that drafted him in 2010. There’s also the angle that the negative Nancy’s went with, and that he won the Cup before Connor McDavid. However, Hall’s path to the Stanley Cup has been turbulent, and he didn’t really have a team to call home after Edmonton. Having stints with New Jersey, Buffalo, Arizona, Boston, and Chicago since 2o16. Even former Oilers forward Sam Gagner congratulated ‘Hallsy’ on his Instagram story last night.
Give him his flowers man! He’s an old man now he did well!! But Connor is gonna do with the same team he was drafted it’s gonna mean more when he wins it lol – Harry R Bull via Facebook
Congratulations Taylor, we always knew you were a champion. Hoist that cup, it is well-earned. From an Edmonton Oilers fan, let me say I am proud to see you in the winner’s circle. Thank you for your years with us, and thank you for superlative hockey! – David T. Marko via Facebook

I’m so happy for Hall he deserves it. 16 years 16 season and he’s finally gets a Stanley Cup.🏆 Hopefully McDavid had the opportunity to lift the Stanley Cup before he grew old because HE DESERVES IT. – Bradley_phakjira via Instagram
In the Oilers sphere, no one seems upset about Taylor Hall winning the Cup with Carolina. If anything, they’re delighted he won it; they’re happy it wasn’t Vegas and feel the organization needs to take a page out of the Hurricanes’ book on how to get it done.
