The Edmonton Oilers delivered a mixed bag injury update on Friday, as the team continues to lose bodies down the stretch drive of the regular season.
Trent Frederic did not return in the third period against the Florida Panthers, an eventual 4-0 loss. On his last shift of the second period, Frederic fell while on the forecheck.
He had played 9:03 of ice-time, with two hits, and one shot on goal. His injury has not been labelled yet.
“Frederic is out with an injury, and I don’t have a timeline for that,” said head coach Kris Knoblauch on Friday.
It’s been largely a season of struggles for Frederic, but his game had turned around out of the Olympic break with noticeably faster footspeed. In total, he has four goals and six points on the season in 67 games.
It’s expected that Roby Järventie will make his Edmonton Oilers debut in his absence, following his emergency recall on Thursday. The former second-round pick has a career-high 17 goals and 36 points with the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL in 52 games.
Emberson nearing return
The team might also get reinforcements in the form of defenceman Ty Emberson.
The right-shot blueliner has missed five games with an undisclosed injury suffered against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday, March 10. Although he wasn’t part of the three defence pairs at Friday’s practice, he’s been skating and doing extra work after practice.
“Emberson looks like he can return on Saturday,” said Knoblauch.
In 60 games this season, the 25-year-old has two goals and 12 points.
Meanwhile, Curtis Lazar has been on the ice again this week. Knoblauch said Lazar could come back in April. He is currently on Long-Term Injured Reserve after an injury sustained back on March 3 against the Ottawa Senators, with an original timeline of four weeks.
Lazar has three goals and five points in 38 games this season.
Leon Draisaitl was officially placed on LTIR on Thursday, as the team pronounced him out for the remainder of the regular season this week. Colten Dach and Mattias Janmark are also on LTIR. There’s been no timeline placed on Dach.
The Oilers wrap up a four-game homestand against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night.
