Amid a less chaotic trade deadline day than many hoped for, there were a few news items around the Edmonton Oilers that slipped under the radar.
News of the Oilers’ newest acquisitions, Jason Dickinson, Connor Murphy and Colton Dach suiting up when the puck drops against the Carolina Hurricanes, however, wasn’t one of them.
Janmark out for the season
Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch said Friday that forward Mattias Janmark would miss the remainder of the regular season and playoffs after undergoing shoulder surgery.
It’s believed to be on a nagging shoulder injury, and while earlier reports indicated he would be out for just the regular season, Knoblauch confirmed it will be longer than that. Janmark is expected to return for training camp ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The 33-year-old has appeared in 43 games this season, scoring a goal and eight points, and missed the first 16 games of the season after suffering an injury in the preseason.
Janmark has one year left on a contract paying him $1.45 million.
Samanski sent down
The Edmonton Oilers loaned centre Josh Samanski to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, the club announced.
While Samanski had been recalled just days prior by the team, his assignment will ensure that he will be eligible to play in the AHL playoffs. He’s appeared in six games for the Oilers this season, notching two assists, and represented his home country of Germany at the 2026 Olympics alongside Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl. Samanski posted a goal and an assist, both of which points included Draisaitl.
The 23-year-old signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Oilers last summer out of Germany, where he had been in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) for the Straubing Tigers. His first year in the North American ranks as a pro has been nothing short of a success, with him racking up eight goals and 31 points in 44 games, playing as the Condors’ first-line centre and in all situations.
