After a tumultuous rookie season Holloway is back, looking to make the Oilers roster out of training camp, and take a step forward in his career. The young winger made the Oilers roster last season, but struggled to gain much of a foothold. It resulted in him being sent to the American Hockey League in February, but he injured his shoulder in his first game.
Despite that, Holloway returned later in the year and made his presence felt. This year, however, he’ll be looking to do that on the NHL roster.
Holloway’s underlying numbers from last year were encouraging. Edmonton controlled the pace of play with him on the ice, and his individual contributions pegged him as a third-to-fourth liner. There’s more than enough room to grow, and I wouldn’t put too much weight into his charts given his limited sample size.
What we can see, however, is that Holloway gets a lot of looks from in tight and that’s something that will continue to play to his benefit. The Oilers need more players willing to drive to those dirty areas, and Holloway has a penchant for that. As well, he’s continued to show off his high motor in the pre-season, and that bodes well for him.
As a whole, I think we can expect to see Holloway score around 10 goals finishing somewhere around 25 points on the year. It would be an improvement off the three goals and nine points scored in 51 games last season.
