The hockey-deprived are scrounging social media, watching old highlights, reading lists, and arguing with them twice, trying to find something to feed their fix.
For those who follow Gary Roberts Performance on Instagram, well, you got a six-second snippet of Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid doing Connor McDavid things on Wednesday.
They released a montage with some of their most well-known players doing on-ice training that had Oilers fans excited, with just this seven-second clip going viral on social media.
Let’s just say, McDavid’s boots are moving.
Is that enough to get you missing hockey?

‘You don’t want to get out of shape’

McDavid is amongst friends as Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman have also been training at Gary Roberts Performance this summer, alongside other NHLers like Chris Tanev, Shane Wright, and various others.
Established as one of the most famous high-performance training programs, McDavid has been training at the facility near his childhood home since he was 15 years old.
“Within two or three weeks, guys are back in the gym,” said Gary Roberts on a recent appearance on the Clearing the Crease podcast. He was talking about how quickly elite athletes can get out of shape if they aren’t careful.
“You literally don’t want to get out of shape…If you go and have lots of fun for a week or two weeks, you’re starting to get out of shape. Aerobically, I think you get out of shape quickly, like 72 hours.”
Others have spoken at length about how hard McDavid trains in the offseason, rarely taking a full day off. Roberts would know with his long history with McDavid, being part of one of the most critical junctures in McDavid’s career.

Gary Roberts’ history training McDavid

It’s almost forgotten now, but McDavid suffered a serious injury to his left knee in the last regular-season game of the 2018-19 season. He ended up missing no games, despite tearing his PCL and other ligaments and cracking his tibia.
The unusual nature of the injury forced McDavid into a decision: do the surgery, which had its risks but would force him out for 10 months, or take the unconventional route of intense rehab and physiotherapy instead.
In the Sportsnet documentary Connor McDavid: Whatever It Takes that followed his recovery, Roberts spoke about the decision: “No one has done what Connor has done to rehabilitate himself back from a serious knee injury in that period of time.”
So Roberts has seen McDavid’s commitment.
With this extended layoff, the Oilers captain and his teammates have a chance to recover and train. Although a disappointing end to the season, this was the longest offseason for the Oilers since 2021. It oughta be beneficial.
“I think people totally underestimate the wear and tear on the body when you go to the Stanley Cup final two years in a row and to top it off, you don’t win,” said Roberts on Clearing the Crease.
“And now you’re back in the playoffs again with basically two summers of basically just staying even, I call it. You’re not making gains you’re trying to get healthy to go back to training camp. I think people underestimate just how hard it is on the body to play that long, year after year, and try to repeat it, especially in today’s game.”
