The Edmonton Oilers recalled defenceman Philip Broberg from the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors Thursday morning.
Broberg, 20, has spent two previous stints with the Oilers this year. He played eight games between Nov. 20 and Dec. 7 scoring one assist, then was recalled when Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson were promoted to the NHL.
He was a staple as a sixth and seventh defenceman in Edmonton averaging 12:14 TOI per game, scoring one assist in his time. And honestly, he showed well.
He appeared in 14 games over that time frame and at 5×5 with him on the ice, the Oilers controlled 53.81 percent of the shot attempts, 46.15 percent of the goals scored (6-7) and 51.45 percent of the expected goal share. This all the while with a low PDO of 96.5 showing there was some poor puck luck with him on the ice.
Broberg will draw into the Oilers lineup tonight against the San Jose Sharks skating on the third pairing alongside Tyson Barrie.
Come playoffs, I wonder if the Oilers will look at keeping him around and playing 11/7 again, especially if Darnell Nurse misses any playoff action.
