The Edmonton Oilers are dropping points to bad teams.
On Wednesday evening, the Oilers played their final game against the Calgary Flames this season, falling 4-3 to head into the Olympic break. Let’s take a look at what went on in this one.
The first period was full of penalties. Calgary received the first one, and a little over three minutes into the first period, they opened the scoring. With a screen in front of the net, Jonathan Huberdeau received the puck at the top of the faceoff dot and ripped it past Tristan Jarry for the 1-0 lead.
On Wednesday afternoon, Leon Draisaitl was named as Germany’s flagbearer. Then on Wednesday evening, the centre scored about two minutes after the Flames goal to tie the game. Also on the power play, Draisaitl received the puck down low, attacked the net, and flipped the puck over Devin Cooley’s shoulder to tie the game up at one.

Unsurprisingly, the next goal also came on the power play. This time, the Flames had a power play with about five minutes left in the first period, and Matvei Gridin received a stretch pass for a breakaway. The Flame forward ripped the puck over Jarry’s blocker to give the Flames a 2-1 lead.

Moving to the second period, the Flames extended their lead to 3-1 with eight minutes left in the period. After setting up a cycle in the Oilers end, Nazem Kadri passed the puck to Zach Whitecloud at the point, with the right-shot defenceman firing it past Jarry with a few bodies in front of him.

With 94 seconds left in the middle frame, the Oilers cut the lead to one goal, also coming on the power play. Evan Bouchard had the puck between the two faceoff dots and threatened to shoot.. This allowed Draisaitl to move into his office, and once he received the pass from Bouchard, he made no mistake in scoring his second of the game.

Just over four minutes into the third period, Kasperi Kapanen scored his second goal in as many games. On a rush chance, Vasily Podkolzin dropped it to the Finnish winger in the slot, with Kapanen’s shot initially being saved by Cooley. However, a few bounces later, the puck just barely crossed the line to tie the game at three.

That tie game lasted about two and a half minutes. A Flames shot from the point was deflected up into the air, with Ty Emberson kicking it once it landed, The puck then landed to Ryan Lomberg, who also kicked it towards the goal. Jarry kicked out the rebound, but it landed right on the stick of Lomberg, restoring the Flames’ lead.

Takeaways…
This game was the final installment of the 2025-26 Battle of Alberta. Two days before Christmas Day, the two teams played the game with the most penalty minutes this season. Well, Wednesday’s affair was another chippy one.
The highlight of the game, at least in terms of the chippiness, was the fight between Joel Hanley and Ty Emberson. In one of the best fights of the season, the two defencemen exchanged bombs in an even affair. Good stuff.
VOTE ON WHO WON THE FIGHT
Last season, Kasperi Kapanen scored six goals and 14 points in 67 games, 57 of those games came with the Oilers. Well, through 19 games this season, the Finnish winger has five goals and 12 points. He’s fit so well alongside Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin.
Evan Bouchard had another strong game, picking up three assists. In fact, the right-shot defenceman reached his 300th point on Wednesday, giving him 70 goals and 301 points in 405 career games, with 15 goals and 63 points in 58 games this season.
Leon Draisaitl scored twice in this game, his 28th and 29th goals of the season. Additionally, this was his 72nd mutlti-goal game for the German, just four multi-goal games behind Glenn Anderson for third in franchise history.
It was another tough game for Tristan Jarry, as he allowed four goals on 25 shots for an .840 save percentage. In the 11 games he’s played as an Oiler, only two full games have seen him finish with a save percentage of .900 or higher. He needs to be better.
The Flames got the better of the Oilers in three of the four Battle of Alberta matchups. In their season opener, the Oilers blew a 3-0 lead in a 4-3 shootout loss. The Oilers won that December 23rd game, but lost after the holiday break. Missing out on these points is less than ideal.
It’ll be a long time before the Oilers play again, as Wednesday evening’s game was their final game before the Olympic break. Every Oiler except for Draisaitl, Josh Samanski, and McDavid will have the next few weeks off. They’ll return to action on February 25th on the road against the Anaheim Ducks.
