The Edmonton Oilers have signed centre Jason Dickinson to a five-year contract, the club announced Sunday.
The new deal for the 30-year-old native of Georgetown, Ont. will see him earn an $4 million per year on his deal.
Dickinson was acquired by the Oilers on March 4, 2026, from the Chicago Blackhawks alongside Colton Dach. In exchange, the Oilers send back a 2027 first-round pick and disgruntled winger Andrew Mangiapane.
He drew in for 17 regular-season games down the stretch run of the season, scoring a goal and four points, adding a pair of goals and three points in four playoff games. Dickinson was one of many injured Oilers heading into the playoffs this past season, having suffered a broken foot after blocking a shot against the San Jose Sharks late in the regular season.
Dickinson is considered one of the league’s best defensive centres, driving play in his own zone at a 19 per cent rate above league average last season, according to HockeyViz. He chipped in league-average offence, and penalty kill work at a three per cent rate above league average, with his overall contributions at the rate of a first-line player.
Rumours swirled this summer about what Dickinson’s next contract could look like — in Edmonton or elsewhere — with some reports suggesting a new deal could pay him in the $5 million per year range. In fact, that’s almost exactly what AFP Analytics, a website that projections what future free agent contracts could look like, suggested Dickinson could earn on a four-year deal. Instead, the Oilers shaved a million off, and gave him one extra year of term.
Steam started to pick up Saturday about a potential new deal for Dickinson, with Sportsnet’s Mark Spector reporting there was “very positive movement towards a deal.”
Dickinson is the second pending free agent the Oilers have signed leading into July 1, having inked goaltender Connor Ungar to a one-year contract Thursday.
