The Edmonton Oilers have signed their 2023 sixth-round draft pick to an entry-level contract.
The club announced Saturday afternoon that goaltender Nathaniel Day had agreed to terms on the three-year deal. Day, 20, drew in for 59 games with the Ontario Hockey League’s Flint Firebirds, posting a 26-25-2-3 record, a 3.07 goals against average and a .894 save percentage.
Day was named the Firebirds’ most valuable player this year after leading all OHL netminders in games and minutes played, facing the fourth-most shots and snagging the seventh-most wins.
The Firebirds posted a 29-34-2-3 record, finishing sixth in the OHL’s Western Conference and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in five games by the Kitchener Rangers, who finished third in the conference. Day played all five games, posting a 3.37 goals against average and a .902 save percentage, with the one win being a shutout performance.

While his numbers may not jump off the table as being strong, he played on a Firebirds team that struggled throughout his OHL tenure.
While Day didn’t land on Oilersnation’s Top 20 prospects list last summer, prospect writer Bruce Curlock had good notes on him from his play at the Young Stars Tournament last September.
In terms of goaltending, both Nathaniel Day and Connor Ungar were very good. Both were under constant pressure in the one game each of them played. Day looked much improved over last season. His movements were much more economic and he tracked the puck very well. He definitely has some athleticism in his game.
Here’s what the Elite Prospects prospect guide on Day when the Oilers selected him.
Day displays a lot of patience in a variety of different scoring opportunities. He is solid and composed on breakaways, rarely making the first move. When the puck is worked around the zone, he shows good attention to detail by making micro adjustments with his feet to stay on angle, even when the play around him speeds up.
Day is a likely candidate to begin next season in the ECHL and begin his pro career. He joins the likes of Olivier Rodrigue and Connor Ungar as goaltending prospects in Oilers system.
