The Edmonton Oilers have made another trade, beyond the normal NHL trade deadline.
In a swap of forwards on Friday, the Oilers acquired Josh Bloom from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Jayden GrubbeBloom was a third-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres back in the 2021 NHL Draft. In February 2023, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for Riley Stillman.
He’s split time between the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL and the Abbotsford Canucks of the AHL this season. Bloom has just one goal in 19 games in Abbotsford. However, as a member of the Wings, he’s scored 15 goals and 28 points in 19 games.
CanucksArmy listed Bloom as their 15th-best organizational prospect, as writer Dave Hall said this about Bloom:
“What has stood out to us with his game is how he generates his production. He’s a relentless competitor who thrives in the gritty areas, digging for pucks and battling at the net front to create scoring chances. While his power play work on the half-wall highlights a quick, accurate shot that could beat ECHL netminders, it’s always his hustle that stands out as his true calling card.”
Grubbe is also a former third-round pick, taken by the New York Rangers in 2021, but was quickly shipped to Edmonton for a fifth-round pick in the 2023 draft.
The last two seasons, Grubbe played with the Bakersfield Condors, but has lost footing in the Oilers organization.
Down with the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL, Grubbe has scored seven goals and 19 points in 28 games. He played four seasons with the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL as a junior, and produced a strong 20-year-old season, contributing over a point per game in the regular season and playoffs.
NHL teams can still make trades beyond the deadline, but these players cannot play in the postseason.
