The Edmonton Oilers are fishing around the league for a potential goalie trade.
During the NHL Draft weekend, the Oilers were reportedly exploring the availability of acquiring young Buffalo Sabres netminder Devon Levi. He’s played 39 NHL games since 2022, but did not suit up last season with the Sabres, prompting trade speculation.
“I heard Buffalo had Devon Levi out there quite a bit on the weekend,” said Elliotte Friedman on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast on Monday. “I heard one team that did some real research into him was Edmonton.
“Obviously, that didn’t happen. Look, if they get a (Connor) Hellebuyck deal done, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s clearly going the other way. But I don’t know what Levi’s future is going to be in Buffalo.”
Levi is 24 years old and played 52 games in the American Hockey League with the Rochester Americans in 2025-26. He finished with a 23-20-9 record with a 2.83 goals against and a .904 save percentage.
That was a step back from his performance the last two years in the AHL, falling from a .927 save percentage in 2023-24 to a .919 save percentage in 2024-25.
The Sabres have three goaltenders under contract for next season: UPL, Alex Lyon, and Colten Ellis. Levi was a piece the Sabres got in return for Sam Reinhart from the Florida Panthers in the trade back in July 2021, along with a first-round pick. But it doesn’t seem there’s a path to the NHL, especially as he turns 25 in December.
General manager Stan Bowman has “irons in the fire” on the goalie market. The Oilers were reportedly interested in Sebastian Cossa, but the Utah Mammoth stepped up and paid a first-round pick to Detroit.
Pending free agent Connor Ingram is “bullish” on re-signing with Edmonton, but Ottawa is also showing interest in the 29-year-old.
The free agent pool is thin, featuring multiple-time Stanley Cup champ and Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky. He’s looking for a long-term deal worth $6-7 million. Frederik Andersen, Stuart Skinner, and Cam Talbot are other names out there.
But Ingram had the highest save percentage in 2025-26 of pending free agents who played more than five games at a .899 save percentage.
