A goaltender the Edmonton Oilers were targeting is now off the board.
During Day 1 of the 2026 NHL draft, the Detroit Red Wings sent netminder Sebastian Cossa to the Utah Mammoth for the 23rd overall pick. Funnily enough, that pick was used to select a teammate of Oilers prospect Tommy Lafrenière, JP Hurlbert.
Cossa had been loosely linked to the Oilers for a better part of a year, with talks allegedly intensifying following the Oilers’ departure from the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs. Drafted 15th overall in 2021, Cossa has played just one NHL game, playing 45 minutes and picking up a shootout win in 2024-25.
Other than that, the 23-year-old netminder has been stuck playing with the Red Wings’ American Hockey League teams since winning the Ed Chynoweth Cup with the Western Hockey League’s Edmonton Oil Kings in 2021-22.
He’s been in a 1A/1B situation the past three seasons, posting a .913 save percentage and 2.41 goals against average in 40 games in 2023-24. In 2024-25, he played 41 games with a .911 save percentage and 2.45 goals against average. And just last season, Cossa amassed 39 games with a .915 save percentage and 2.33 goals against average.
However, Cossa sat on the bench in all eight of the Grand Rapids Griffins’ Calder Cup playoff games, as Michal Postava took over the starter role. With Trey Augustine on the way, and Cossa being eligible for waivers next season, the Hamilton, Ontario native was the odd man out.
With the Oilers’ first pick in the 2026 draft being 52nd, there was no way to match what the Mammoth offered, leaving the team to look elsewhere for goaltending options as the off-season continues.
Whether they acquire a goaltender in free agency or through a trade is yet to be seen, but the Oilers are back to square one when it comes to finding their biggest need this off-season.
