The organization announced the return of its annual autograph session at West Edmonton Mall on Thursday, setting November 27th as the date. It’ll take place between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. across the mall, with the full Oilers roster strewn throughout the mall.
The highly attended event will allow fans to get one autograph per person, per player, with special regulations set in place for the most popular Oilers, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The first 300 fans in line to see either half of the Dynamic Duo will be guaranteed access to their tables, but once fans enter the line, leaving for an extended period and returning won’t be permitted, and spots won’t be held with lines regulated by wristbands, WEM said in their announcement.
McDavid will only be singing custom Upper Deck photos provided at the table and posed photograph opportunities with any player aren’t permitted, they added. West Edmonton Mall opens at 6 a.m. on Nov. 27th, the soonest time that fans will be able line up for access to the mall.
The autograph session is one of the best times of years for fans, who have flocked to West Edmonton Mall from far and wide to get a chance to meet their favourite players.
A longstanding tradition in Edmonton, autograph sessions have been held dating back to the Oilers’ days in the World Hockey Association. The first such event was held on October 25th, 1978 at Kingway Garden Mall. Radio voice Rod Phillips introduced the team, while home game organist Rick LeBanc was there to entertain fans.

Those looking to meet Oilers head coach Glen Sather were able to do so outside Coles Book Stores, while Steve Carlson — later famous for his role in the legendary hockey movie Slapshot — could do so outside St. Clair Paint.
While that 1978-79 season marked Wayne Gretzky’s first with the Oilers organization, he wasn’t a part of the team quite yet, acquired by Edmonton on November 2nd — eight days after the autograph session.
