The Tristan Jarry-era kicks off with a win for the Edmonton Oilers.
On Saturday evening, the Oilers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-3 to move to 15-11-6 this season. It’s a good win to kick off their five-game road trip. Let’s take a look at what happened in this one!
Early into the game, Connor McDavid scored a nasty goal by burning a Maple Leaf defender. It’s not the first time he’s scored a goal like this against his hometown team, and it surely won’t be the last time. It was the Oilers’ captain’s 17th goal of the game, but the Leafs managed to tie it with just under four minutes left in the first period.
Five minutes into the second period, Oliver Ekman-Larsson beat Jarry to give the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead. Thankfully, that wasn’t the only goal from a Maple Leafs defender, as former Oiler Troy Stecher shot the puck into his own net on McDavid’s centring pass to make it 2-2. Late in second, Darnell Nurse scored his sixth of the season, as he crept into the slot and one-timed it past the Maple Leafs’ netminder to give the Oilers 3-2 lead.

It was all the Oilers from there. Just over a minute into the third period, Leon Draisaitl’s shot from the top of the faceoff circle deflected off Vasily Podkolzin and into the back of the net. Less than a minute later, the two players connected on another goal, as Draisaitl made a strong move to his forehand, then backhand passed it to Podkolzin, who won a puck battle in the slot to deflect it past the netminder.

The game was put away by former Maple Leaf Zach Hyman, as he stripped the puck before it got out of the offensive zone and eventually backhanded it in to make it 6-2. In the final minute of the third, the Leafs scored off a faceoff to make it 6-3.

Takeaways…
Starting with Jarry, the Oilers’ newest netminder was less than 60 seconds away from finishing with a save percentage above .900. Unfortunately, that third goal gave him an .893 save percentage, stopping 25 of 28 shots. The other two goals had some questionable rebound control, but he made some big stops as well.
Leon Draisaitl didn’t hit 1,000 points, although he was pretty close late in the game. With three assists, the German centre now has 999 points. He’ll have another chance to reach the millennium point milestone on Sunday.
Two of those assists came thanks to goals from Vasily Podkolzin. Over his last nine games, Podkolzin has five goals and seven points, giving him eight goals and 15 points this season, matching his goal total from last season. The Russian forward is on pace for 20 goals and 38 points over 82 games.
Connor McDavid has been a man on a mission in recent times. Since Nov. 29, McDavid has eight goals and 17 points in seven games, as the Oilers are 5-1-1 in that span. The claim that he’s declined has been greatly exaggerated.
Darnell Nurse had a strong game on defence, scoring a goal. Both he and Alec Regula were a +3, while Evan Bouchard was a +2 with an assist. Spencer Stastney looked alright in this game.
Next up for the Oilers is another game against a Canadian team in the Atlantic Division, as they take on the Montréal Canadiens on Sunday at 5:00 PM MT.
